This sign here on the edge of Essex and London, in the Abridge area. It still says "A11", despite not only the old A11 being nowhere near, the nearest section of A11 is in Whitechapel

Interesting in that it says "Dartford Crossing", not "Dartford Tunnel". When was this bit of A11 downgraded?

Signs for a no longer extant cycle route, the Oxfordshire Cycleway. I suspect some of them postdate the route being abandoned and are just like-for-like replacements.

(Map of the old route here: https://cycle.travel/map/journey/8874 and here: https://cycle.travel/map/journey/8875 . I suspect there are still probably more signs to be found around the county...)

I am not toally sure TBH, I believe it would have been when the M11 reached London, in around 77'? But it might not have been until the 90s - the A11 is also signed alongside the A106 at the Green Man Roundabout approaching Leytonstone High St. Maybe the 90s then? Does anyone here have a definitive answer?

Not an exciting example, but we can take bets on how long this Highways Agency reference will remain.

This is indeed the B6200 and was once the A57 so this sign isn't strictly out of date but approx. 26 years after it ceased to be the A57 this sign it has certainly outlived its usefulness.

If that sign is 26 years old it must have been one of the first without visible bolt fixings on the front. I believe this came into effect in 1994 along with the Guildford rules.

Not strictly a road sign, but this one is 20 years obsolete, according to... Well, the sign.

The new A57 opened about 1994*. I assume that's when the sign was put up but it's possible some jobsworth might have replaced it later.

* It's marked as scheduled for completion in 1991 in my 1991 A-Z so wasn't open before 1992, and was open by December 1994 when I remember reentering the city along a road I didn't know existed after nine weeks in The Strange Land of East Anglia.

Well it's a sign and it's on a road so that makes it a road sign? :stir:

And yet the "proper" sign above it says "M60".....

Where exactly is this one?

Might have asked this before but there are several signs in Trafford Park referring to Dumplington and Mossfield - are these widely recognised places any more?

It's in Trafford Park. I took a picture of that sign about 8 years ago when I was out on my bike and only yesterday, shortly before Rambo posted it, I was wondering if it was still there!

Edit - it is right here

Yes just outside the Container base at Trafford Park on the bridge over the canal. I went for a mooch around on the way home from work taking a look at the disused Barton dock road railway where there are plenty of obsolete signs still there.

There's still a very battered sign on the bridge over the river in Egremont that reads A595 Workington. The town has been by passed for 27 years, but this sign has never been removed, although it does seem to be on its last legs with the lettering fading away.

Another out of date sign in Trafford Park. The railway here has been lifted along Barton dock road.

A very faded sign that is! Fun fact about that crossing; it was the last in the country to have wig-wags without an amber light.

I believe (some of) those Forest City wig-wags originally started life at this long-defunct crossing at Vauxhall Motors. It also, interestingly, features an out-of-date sign.

I wrote a letter to Peel (having first been re-directed by Vauxhall) at some stage in the early 2000s (I think) enquiring if they had any plans for the old equipment at Vauxhall Motors. I assume it must have looked old enough to appeal to my collector's eye!

Much to my surprise, Peel actually replied, with an interesting development. They stated that they were planning for the re-installation of level crossing equipment on the Barton Dock Branch for (I assume) a re-introduction of services to the Containerbase site. They were the owner of the railway at Vauxhall Motors and since they'd been alerted to the presence of these disused signals on an MSC railway site, they had decided to refurbish them and place them back in to service at Barton Dock Road. Their refurbishment involved botching red and white borders on to the backing boards.

Not quite the result I'd hoped for, but I was very grateful for them taking the time to respond in the first place!

The junction at Kellogg's got two aspect Peek Elite heads (under GMUTC control) at the same time, replacing the previously removed two aspect Tin lanterns there.

Thats interesting. I have photos of container trains running along the Barton dock branch in 2011/12 but had no interest in roadside infastructure at the time. I know that by Kelloggs i think the driver used to press a button at the crossing when set all of the traffic lights to red.
I think the Barton dock line has been in use constantly until closure in about 2013 but could be wrong? Are you sure Peel didn't re use those wig wags on the nearby line to Manisty wharf at Ellesmere Port? that was derelict and was re activated in 2005 for coal traffic.
Edit : just looking at GSV of the Manisty branch there are 3 crossing with wig wags but they all look modern. But i'm not really up to date with these.
