Re: Out of date road signs
Indeed - you can make as many standard-size "(A1(M))" patches as you like, but you won't fit one on a sign like this.DavidBrown wrote: ↑Sat Oct 05, 2019 21:59I guess another thing to bear in mind is that (A1(M)) on a sign is significantly longer than (A1), and by the time you include the blue panel required that's a lot of extra space required on the sign. So what might start off as a simple patch is now all of a sudden a whole new sign being required. Repeat hundreds, if not thousands of times, and all of a sudden you've got one hell of a big job and one hell of a big bill, irregardless of whether it's HE or NYCC stumping up for it.Debaser wrote: ↑Sat Oct 05, 2019 21:45 For the A1(M) NYCC would have liked every sign on their network referring to the A1 to have been patched. It not being their network HE would have preferred to have changed none of the local road signs, in the end there was the compromise of signs within a narrow corridor being altered.

In a similar vain, I’ve just seen a AA (temporary) sign which is so old it has now faded to cream.
Not technically out of date though.

Re: Out of date road signs
Yeah that is true. TBH I'd rather have consistency rather than correctness. But in 5, 10, 15 or even 20 years when those signs are going to be replaced, would they ensure that all the signs along there that have (A1) on it would either be replaced or patched?
Re: Out of date road signs
The post I deleted was about that sort of thing, but for Bryn's sanity I don't think we should go there.
Re: Out of date road signs
Look at these two roadsigns, follow the road down to the next junction and tell me what you think. The road has changed since the previous pics in 2017 - do compare that.

Re: Out of date road signs
That's a great candidate to blank out the (A1) and just leave it as A162!
Pragmatically, (A1) is not totally incorrect. The through route is still the A1, it's just under motorway restrictions.
Re: Out of date road signs
This sign on the A34 in Manchester advises drivers to turn left along a road that's now been permanently closed to traffic.
In fairness, just before it is this easy-to-miss sign telling you not to try to turn.

Re: Out of date road signs
Thought i would put these in this thread. Out of date by the fact that according to GSV there haven't been any Wig Wags by this fire station since 2010 yet the sign and control box remain. Also i can find lots of newer versions of this sign as seen at level crossings etc but not many like this. Does anybody know when this older style of sign became obsolete? The fire station opening in the late 60's but i'm unsure if it had wig wags since the start..

The new style of sign, showing the picture of the wig-wags, was introduced in the 1994 regulations.

Re: Out of date road signs
Most signs now seem to say "Historic Rochester". I did hear that some "Town centre" signs went up and were vandalised, but I don't know if this is true or not.the cheesecake man wrote: ↑Sun May 19, 2019 16:40 I haven't been to Rochester but they've probably still got City Centre signs reluctant to admit the demotion to town.
There is this sign in Folkestone, now on the B2011....
Also this one on the now-A299 in Thanet.

Re: Out of date road signs
Technically it's not within Greater Manchester, but this sign still exists today in Wilmslow, https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@53.32799 ... 312!8i6656 which must date from the short period between the A34 Cheadle/Wilmslow bypass opening, and the M63/M60 conversion.(Mid 90s?)Rillington wrote: ↑Wed May 08, 2019 13:23 Are there still signs in Manchester directing drivers to the M63? I think there were still a couple not that long ago although they might have been removed now.
Re: Out of date road signs
I nominate this modern sign. Stesion would be correct in pointing one to a railway station if not for one slight issue.... Trawsfynydd Station closed in 1960.

Re: Out of date road signs
It doesn't feature the double-arrow sign, though. And the Welsh for station is gorsaf, isn't it rhyds? I think that the little settlement around the old station is probably known as Stesion. It's a shame that there's no sign at the A470 end to confirm this, but the road from there is Station Road.Big Nick wrote: ↑Fri Apr 17, 2020 12:25 I nominate this modern sign. Re: Out of date road signs
Fair point about the double-arrow. It seems that Stesion has been used in Wales as a simple translation of the English word Station before the more modern Gorsaf.Chris Bertram wrote: ↑Fri Apr 17, 2020 13:11It doesn't feature the double-arrow sign, though. Newton-le-Willows. Vulcan locomotive works sign. The factory closed in 2002 but had different owners in it's latter years. I suspect this is from the 1990's but now out of date as it is now a housing estate.

Re: Out of date road signs
I think these signs are similar in age to the signs with A613 on them that I posted just over a year ago-

Classics. When i see those with round edges and faded light grey border and top light they must be from the 1970's at the earliest. There are some near me like that and i have an image taken in 1981 where they are present.Mattemotorway wrote: ↑Thu Apr 23, 2020 12:16 I think these signs are similar in age to the signs with A613 on them that I posted just over a year ago-

Re: Out of date road signs
The first of those will date from 1975/6 when the Parkway opened and this road, which had been A174, became B1380. A175 still came all the way to Normanby but was not downgraded. I think the second sign may be somewhat later, firstly because of the grey borders on either side, and secondly because of the brackets around (A175), not matching the other sign. As a matter of fact, I don't think A175 was ever truncated short of this, until it was downgraded in its entirety, sometime in the late 80's I think.Mattemotorway wrote: ↑Thu Apr 23, 2020 12:16 I think these signs are similar in age to the signs with A613 on them that I posted just over a year ago-
