Crossing signal

Post by Chris584 »

Does this crossing signal show "WAIT" & "CROSS", and is the "CROSS" in green or white?

I can't get the image clearer.

First inquest I'd ask is "is that pole straight ,or damaged".

I have some screenshots from an old (likely to be) Pathé video somewhere which show similar signals with red 'WAIT' and white 'CROSS' indications.

I assume these were somewhat home-brew, or locally manufactured, as they don't seem to fit the general idea that the other signal companies seemed to be going for at the time.

I've just had a dig through and found these...

Upon close inspection, they look similar, but I'm not convinced they're the same.

Those look very similar to the ones used in France in the 1960s and 70s. They had the words ATTENDEZ in red and PASSEZ in green. The PASSEZ signal would flash as the lights were about to change, just as the green man does today.

Compare to tin lanterns with the same inscriptions for pedestrians.

They're the same corner so I'd like to think the two shots are of the same signal :)

Sorry, I was referring to the worded signal in the original post, not the two images I uploaded that are most definitely from the same signal!

The ones I uploaded are part of an SGE installation, though look like later additions as the poles for these are most definitely not SGE poles. The Westminster finial top of an SGE can be seen over to the right in the background.

Yeah, I'd believe that could be a tin lantern retrofit.

My first thought was it might have been something like the AWA Neon as attached, with a different visor and legends. These were installed in Australia around the same time as the Tin Lanterns and SGEs were still over there - just a potential theory though, of course!
