Backlit trunk road signs

Post by Berk »

My parents have a penchant for retro movies, such as Ealing Comedies. Tonight we sat down to watch The Man in the White Suit. As you may be aware, the protagonist causes a stir with his polymer fibre, and lots of industrialists try and travel down to discuss what it will mean for their businesses.

In one scene you can see cars setting off along (what is depicted as) the A5. In the movie it is shown as having an unusual sort of backlit sign with A5 carved out (possibly mounted by a classic AA logo)??

I’m just wondering if this was all down to artistic licence, or if there genuinely were some backlit signs erected by the AA. Although I think it would’ve been a novelty in the (very early) 1950s.
