Sightline Obstructions

Post by danfw194 »

Does anyone have any examples they've seen where a sightline obstruction has been specifically built to slow drivers down?

This fencing on a road near me brought into mind: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@52.66162 ... 312!8i6656
I'm almost certain this fencing was erected for the sole reason to hinder the sightline of drivers on approach to the roundabout, forcing them to slow down. It's sensible, because it's a tricky little roundabout dealing with a lot of traffic, and traffic on approach is already travelling quickly down a hill.

I could be wrong, there could be another reason for the fencing to be there, but it seems logical as a sightline obstruction to me.

Yes, it's a very common trick.

As with anything designed to ensure the driver is paying attention it has its critics, but it's a useful tool in the engineering toolbox.

Five examples off the top of my head:
Ower Roundabout west and east
Chilworth Roundabout
Windhover Roundabout
Hulbert Road
I have websites about: motorway services | Fareham

There's an earth bank on the approach to this roundabout on the A446 just south of Coleshill. It doesn't look much but it blocks your view of the roundabout until quite late.
