Down here we have had some red LED lights installed to assist bats crossing the A4440 .
Haven't had the chance to see them in action yet, but possibly the first use of red LEDs on street lighting in the UK?
I have to say from the pictures on the BBC site they don't look a million miles away from the sodium orange glow.

So having spent years replacing orange lights with white to improve visibility etc we've now decided red was better after all ?
And do we really want to create districts with red lights?

Something like this nearly happened for the eastern roundabout of the Little Hadham Bypass in Herts (now under construction) due to a nearby bat colony. I think it was determined the particular species involved were attracted no less to red lights to white lights. In the end, shorter columns were specified to minimise spillage.
