Is there any reason why the "children crossing" sign was redrawn a few years ago?

Post by RJDG14 »

It appears that the Children Crossing road sign was redrawn a few years ago, but the new design is just a slightly more rounded looking version of the old one and 99% percent of the population probably haven't noticed, and so I don't see why it was redrawn in the first place...

It wasn't redrawn.

It was put back to the original 1963 design that some lazy sod hadn't properly copied in later revisions of the TSRGD.

Ah. So were the original signs of it that were made in the 1960s of the correct design, then?

The image is actually based on Worboys sign artist Margaret Calvert and her younger brother. Margaret has always been proud of it being a girl leading a boy, instead of the stereotype (and the predecessor signs) the other way round.

To me the pre-Worboys sign doesn't look like the boy is leading the girl. The angle of the kerb suggests they are stepping off it side by side, and the girl appears smaller because she is further away (cue Father Ted references).

I always thought the current sign was Mum taking the lad to school....
