The Remaining Alpha 1's

Post by Divine »

Wondering if there's any Alpha 1's kicking about. I knew of two, one went a while back in Denby Dale. The other I last saw in July this year in Stourbridge. Anyone know of any others?

Here's the one in Stourbridge. Last saw this in July, so I'm unsure if its gone.

I don't see an alpha 1 mate. Just a roundabout with some fresh LEDs? Am I missing something?

Maybe the image isn't zoomed in on your side, I dunno. Look to the left of the Gosling Sports Park access road, there is an Alpha 1 poking out of the foliage. They used to be all over WGC but no longer.

Some of the ones on Hempshaw Lane in Stockport are still there last times I drove that way.

Hi, could anyone suggest where I can acquire a Thorn Alpha 1 street light as they're slowly being replaced by LED's, I've tried local council, ebay, facebook and Gumtree to no avail?

Yes now I see it! I zoomed in and saw it. Sad to see it rotting away in foliage...

Strange they left the Alpha 1's and upgraded a few SOX around them to LED.

Yes until a few years ago most of the side streets in that area had Beta 5s on concrete or cast iron swan necked columns, which have almost all been replaced.

That's a shame. I use to see Beta 5's everywhere, now I am lucky to see one. Calderdale still have some left, Kirklees very few :(

Stockport still has quite a few Alpha 1s knocking about.

Yes on Hempshaw Lane, as I mentioned above, not too far away is a 2nd hand Land Rover Dealer with some Alpha 3's at the edges of the forecourt.

Alpha 3's are weirdly common in dealership forecourts. There's still a lot of forecourts around Kirklees with Alpha 3's.

I've seen them elsewhere used on garages, I presume they can light up a large area, which would make them ideal.

They do have a good light output. Most dealers aren't interested in changing them either.

Two on this forecourt, which also used to have a post-top Thorn in the middle as well. It's since been removed. When I was little it was a petrol station with two pumps, one either side of the post-top light in the middle. You can still see it if you spin back Streetview to 2012.

That's one nice photo. Shame Alpha 1's are almost gone, the design still looks reasonably modern.
