This road in Stourbridge still has some very old columns with Alpha 1's!

As of January 2020(!), Derby still has at least four Alpha 1s on this stretch of road. The City Council had a PFI which started in 2006, with most street lighting being converted to Philips Iridium, however in some areas they decided to keep some of the newer SOX lanterns and just tidy them up. However the road I've linked still has some original Alpha 1s which are in very good condition, as it was decided that instead of replacing them they'd be tidied up and the columns painted to look newer. It's expected that these SOX lanterns will be replaced be LED units very soon though.

Hi, I'm new to SABRE but I made an account because I know there is an Alpha 1 in Eckington here: https://www.google.com/maps/@53.3104873 ... 312!8i6656 . I was quite surprised when I saw it since most of the street lights in the area have been replaced with SON and LED.

There's still two left on the A5013 near Stafford.

There may still be a few on Hampstead Road, West Bromwich?

I recall these columns being moved from West Bromwich High St and being relocated here with their mercury lanterns, replacing old Stanton 7As.

There was still plenty left in Sandwell when I moved from there in 2014. I filmed this one outside my house being removed in 2012.

I'm not sure if any are left in Stockport, the council has been on a replacement drive recently.

Those are Alpha 3s, which were ubiquitous in town centres and one of my favourite lanterns. I mourn their passing still.

Blackburn used to have several Alpha 1s but they vanished long ago as part of a move to the ugly as sin WRTL Vectra.

Ah, that explains it - I was going "but those ones people have been posting look like Alpha 3s from this angle."

Alpha 3's were also popular in garage forecourts. Many still survive.

A lot are so old they're actually Atlas Alpha 3s.

Like the survivor going into Strensham Services - 1962 vintage and because it straddles the MSA/trunk road boundary it's lasted even through a motorway widening and MSA rebuild. https://goo.gl/maps/2AWUu55aEK1QMcYD7

I'm sure it's been mentioned on here before that the first column on a services slip road often retains its original lantern because of ownernship. Services on the M6 in Cumbria are a case in point.

Alpha 3's are still surprisingly common on public roads in NI (albeit, generally only the occasional lantern), considering they must be about 40 years old? I'm not sure I know of any Alpha 1's in Northern Ireland (or whether they were ever installed here) but Alpha 3's can still be found in the following locations (some of these might have disappeared in the last few months as there have been a few replacement programmes in some of these areas):

Shaw's Bridge
Balmoral
High Street, Ballymena
Bangor

Hit the jackpot. 6 of them. The old location of a local closed down factory still has Alpha 1s standing on the land. Unfortunately, I don't think they work as they are not maintained an full of water. They are not going to be there long though because the land is set to be a new HS2 depot if HS2 isn't cancelled going through the area. Northern Irish streetlighting has always been very aesthetic to me, proper 1960s/70s minimalism with curved brackets and stepped columns like these. Pity this is being lost.

Though roads may not put a smile on everyone's face, there is one road that always will: the road to home.
