'By-passed community' signs

Post by stevenson3529 »

I was looking through the DFT Traffic Signs manual 2018 recently and saw that there was a sign for a 'By-passed community symbol'

On a primary route:

And on a non-primary route:

I was wondering if these have ever been used outside of the Trafic Signs Manual as I have never seen any.

Plenty on the A9 between Perth and Inverness.

There's one here on the A7 just inside Scotland.

Short answer is ... loads in Scotland, don't think any exist anywhere else though. Here's an A1 example.

Yep, you’ll also find them on the A75, A90, A96, and no doubt many other trunk roads in Scotland. Probably quite uncommon on non-primary roads though.

How long have these been in the Manual?

They have been used in Australia since about the 1980s, I'm wondering if this was a sign also borrowed from the UK or whether the UK borrowed it from Aus? Aus example

These signs only make sense for small places. Sticking one on (random example) the A64 for Tadcaster where the two exits are miles apart would be confusing. That's probably why they're only found in remote areas.

These signs were used extensively on the former A74 dual carriageway in Dumfries and Galloway and South Lanarkshire. One of these signs had even been installed on the English side of the border before the exit to Gretna and Gretna Green.

Here is an example on the A1 northbound near Eyemouth:-

And another example on the A9 northbound near Tain:-

Also misleading - the exits at each end of the Taddy bypass are y-splits, inaccessible to traffic travelling *away* from Tadcaster. Also the intermediate junction only has York-facing slips.

They are a fairly recent addition to the manual, but have been used in Scotland long before that, certainly since the 1980s, if not late 70s.

"Miles apart" being about three or four?
That's exactly the kind of places they get used and is not remotely confusing. It's telling you you can visit the town and rejoin the route you are on beyond it, rather than having to double back to get back to your route.

I would say mid/late 1970's, as they were on the old A74 when I first travelled up to the Glasgow area in 1978.

Plenty on the A75, and at least a couple on the A5 in NI. There aren't necessarily ADSes for the actual junctions, but sometimes there are.
