Road numbers in white patches are fine on a green-background sign. The issue there is that there shouldn't be a one-mile sign on an A-road! It looks like whoever arranged for it was attempting to erect signs on an A-road that would match those provided on a motorway.
You have been allowed 1 mile signs on A-roads, but they were never really deemed necessary until recently. A post-94 1 mile sign should have had destinations listed on it.

Highways England's useless drones in the Stoke/Derby region have now replaced several direction signs on the A500 and A38 - including the ahead destinations on the 1m and 1/2m boards. Are these people deliberately thick or do they have to work at it?
