Slip Road Lighting

Post by OliverHyam1998 »

Undoubtedly, the replacement of SOX and SON lighting with LED lighting hasn't gone unnoticed. However, what I have noticed, particularly at some motorway and dual carriageway junctions, is that whilst the lighting on the main junction (whether roundabout or diamond) has been replaced, the lighting on the slip roads in some cases still retain their original lighting. Why is this? Seems a bit odd that a couple of lights on slip roads haven't been replaced

Attached below is an example: the A12 at J18. LED lighting on the main junction but old Philips MA60s on the slip road

Not sure if it applies in your case, but it can be down to the difference in who is responsible for road maintenance. The slip roads could be the responsibility of Highways England (who haven’t replaced their lanterns) and the roundabout is the responsibility of the local authority (who have done an LED replacement scheme).
Best way to tell is to see if the replaced lanterns on the roundabout match lanterns used elsewhere by the local authority.

Yes, it's a HE/LA difference, it's also very jarring such as at the M65 junctions where there are still a few SOX lit slip roads but LED roundabouts.

Terminally cynical, unimpressed, and nearly Middle Age already.
She said life was like a motorway; dull, grey, and long.
