Furthest bracketed direction sign for a non-motorway road number

Post by agc2070 »

There's one sign in Ashford that says 'Hastings A259.' At about twelve miles the A259 seems quite distant but I'm sure there are far better examples.

Maybe a separate category for route confirmation signs is in order. '(A27)' appears on one leaving Rye on the A259, approx 22 miles away, so I think you tend to get a bit more mileage on a RC sign.

the only one I can think of at the moment is https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@50.98834 ... 312!8i6656 (A275) 11 miles

A quick look in Scotland gives an (A82) Fort William at the A9/A86 junction 40 miles away.

The best I can do off the top of my head is the A5061, which is over 25 miles from the sign here.

I know that sign. All other signs in that area do say "Hastings (A2070)" so I'm not sure why that one sign mentions the A259.

Just outside Norwich is this sign, for "Diss (A1066)", which is about 20 miles. "Diss (A1066)" appears on all signs along that stretch of A140, which did amuse/annoy me when I saw it as surely "Diss, Ipswich A140" would be more than adequate.

This RCS on the M5 just after J27 has the M4 signed from over 60 miles away. The M5 itself features on many direction signs a long way from the motorway itself all over Devon - the furthest I know of being near Woolacombe 47 miles away.

I suppose that's because (M5) is a concise way of saying (all other destinations). Anything outside of Devon and parts of Somerset is the other side of the (M5). It makes a surprising amount of sense.

The same applies in the Vale of Glamorgan and Cardiff with the very common South Glamorgan County Council practice of signposting (M4)(A48) absolutely everywhere. Most destinations are north of the A48, the rest are either north of or via the M4, so we don't need signs directing us to 'THE VALLEYS', 'Newport', or anything of that sort. Oh, how I long for the days of really intelligent and intuitive sign design.

Kendal is consistenly signed as Kendal (A591) from the outskirts of Barrow-in-Furness on the A590: I think the most distant sign to do that is here, though there may be others in the town center. There are also examples here and on the A595 at its junction with the A590 here. That most distant sign is 26.4 miles from the A591 according to Google Maps

I reckon this must be a good contender:

"Wick (A99)" signed 1 mile south of Tore Roundabout, and it's 80 miles from there to the A9/A99 junction at Latheron.
I did look further south but the signs only seem to show Thurso (or are outdated ones showing "Wick A9").
