They're a nonsense, the post-1997 definition of bus applies to such signs, so the exemption must always be "local buses".RichardA626 wrote: ↑Sun Jan 31, 2021 22:37The Highway Code mentions "except regular scheduled, schools & works buses"SteelCamel wrote: ↑Sun Jan 31, 2021 14:16Skegness has a couple of "No buses except buses" signs:

Presumably these are supposed to be "except local buses", but as it stands I'd think these are unenforceable as they don't actually prohibit anything.

Re: Just realised I've never actually seen these signs
The example I posted is being used correctly - it's at the entrance to the Dartford tunnels, and you can indeed take either tunnel and end up in exactly the same place.Having a cuppa wrote: ↑Sun Jan 31, 2021 16:07What is odd about "pass either side" signs is that they are never used correctly. They are supposed to indicate you can pass either side to reach the same place but three quarters of the time I see them between the motorway and spurs leading off the motorway.SteelCamel wrote: ↑Sun Jan 31, 2021 14:16 And while "pass either side" signs aren't rare, ones as big as this must be. Unfortunately that example no longer exists!
But it does seem there's an omission from the list of valid signs - if you have a traffic island between lanes, and the lanes on each side go to different places, what should you use to mark the island? As you say, a "pass either side" sign is wrong. I think that a pair of "keep left" and "keep right" signs is also wrong, as you're giving contradictory instructions. Presumably you should just use a bollard with no sign on it.

I assume these are to stop coaches using those routes.Bryn666 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 01, 2021 11:18They're a nonsense, the post-1997 definition of bus applies to such signs, so the exemption must always be "local buses".RichardA626 wrote: ↑Sun Jan 31, 2021 22:37The Highway Code mentions "except regular scheduled, schools & works buses"SteelCamel wrote: ↑Sun Jan 31, 2021 14:16

As part of the test, the examiner showed me cattle grid road sign and asked me what the sign was and followed my answer up with the question "... and what is a cattle grid". Unknown to him, I had been brought up in the country and knew exactly what one was. As soon as I started to describe one in detail, he stopped me - it was obvious that I knew what it was.

We need a thread for Signs We Don't See Anymore
I'd like to add in this Crossroads sign on a back road in Hertford. From reading SABRE Wiki it must be nearly 50 years old.

(Definitely Hertford this time )

Re: Just realised I've never actually seen these signs
There are examples where it has been used incorrectly in the UK, but Ireland is not the only country which uses it to mean only “pass either side” with no qualification about reaching the same destination.Having a cuppa wrote: ↑Sun Jan 31, 2021 16:48That is quite tricky as a lot of them were either temporary, have been removed, or are just difficult to find. What is funny is I recall seeing a Highways England report on the "importance of signing practices" or something like that and on the background of the first or second page, there was a "pass either side" sign between the motorway and a spur leading off.
That’s exactly what you see on the exit of most roundabouts!SteelCamel wrote: ↑Mon Feb 01, 2021 17:11 But it does seem there's an omission from the list of valid signs - if you have a traffic island between lanes, and the lanes on each side go to different places, what should you use to mark the island? Re: Just realised I've never actually seen these signs
I've never seen that in either a temporary or permanent situation on a motorway diverge in the UK, are you sure you're not thinking of a keep left next to a keep right, which is the correct temporary signage at a diverge?Having a cuppa wrote: ↑Sun Jan 31, 2021 16:48 That is quite tricky as a lot of them were either temporary, have been removed, or are just difficult to find. Yes, a bollard with a blank face, as you will see on the island at an exit to a roundabout.SteelCamel wrote: ↑Mon Feb 01, 2021 17:11 Presumably you should just use a bollard with no sign on it.

No buses sign. Seen numerous vehicles pulling caravans or trailers stuck on the hill but as its the only road to a caravan site then a no caravans sign would cause problems.

There's a problem with caravans, so they've banned buses?swissferry wrote: ↑Fri Feb 26, 2021 22:46 No buses sign. Seen numerous vehicles pulling caravans or trailers stuck on the hill but as its the only road to a caravan site then a no caravans sign would cause problems.
