What are these for?

Post by Mike152 »

Seen on the M3 between J4 and J4a
Looks like a mast with an aerial of some description.
Does anyone know what are they for?
Thanks - Mike

The post is a passively safe Lattix. Unfortunately it's well within the working width of the safety barrier, so how both it and the barrier would perform if hit is anyone's guess. Genius design. Not.

The bit on the top, dunno but I'd guess some sort of motorway comms device.

The EB looks rather close and should presumably be designed for impact unless a load limiting device is used.

But the label on the pole says "pAsSiVe"! People get paid for this stuff...

Just bumping this thread, as it seems these could be the new ClearWay radar detectors by Navtech. They're being rolled out for Stopped Vehicle Detection on smart motorways, and I assume they have other broader applications too, perhaps being used in place of induction loops for MIDAS and the likes.

There's more discussion going on in this thread on Smart Motorways.

Simon,
Sorry, it's a bit late but thank you for your reply and link.
It's really interesting.
There are loads of these on the M3 now.
Best Wishes - Mike
