Most Regional Directions on a Sign?

Post by Rob590 »

Subject gives the question I think: what's the most regional directionns that appear on a UK road sign? I presume that there isn't a perfect NORTH/EAST/SOUTH/WEST sign!? I can think of plenty of signs with two destinations, none with three but I'm sure there must be some; are there any with four or more?!

London used to be the place to go to answer this question, but recent sign changes have removed some of these. Historical examples will be easier to find than current ones.

Another three (although not in upper case) on the A449 approach to the M5. If you're allowed three with two being the same, you can do that on the M6 on approaches to the M6 Toll at each end (two SOUTHs or two NORTH WESTs plus a SOUTH WEST in each case).

I have mentioned numerous times that there used to be a sign for J9 of the M6 at the Wednesbury interchange, which featured “The South West”, “the North West”, and quite bizarrely for that area, “Scotland”.

In that case "The SOUTH" may mean something completely different.

It could well do, depending on who is reading it!

That combination also appears in Belfast, and the furthest east is Tillysburn.

The EAST isn't used in NI because Belfast is the primary destination for all routes from the West. Similarly, the NORTH WEST isn't used, even on the A5 from Ballygawley or A31 from Coleraine which are the only trunk routes to have more than one destination in the North West (Strabane and Limavady respectively).

Of the three used regional destinations, the WEST is deemed to begin at M1 J15 (J14 having the last "The West" sign), the SOUTH begins at Hillsborough, and the NORTH begins at Antrim.

There seems to be an area of NI that is north of Hillsborough, south of Antrim, west of Belfast and east of Dungannon that could usefully be signposted as "The LOUGH" :D
