I've mentioned in various threads about some traffic lights having the black & white pattern reversed. Here is a picture taken in northeast London (junction of Lea Bridge Road & Church Road Leyton), in 1937. Another picture taken at the same location in 1939 when the tram wires were being removed to make way for trolleybus wiring show the colours reversed to normal.
I have a picture somewhere of reversed black & white lights in Bournemouth taken in 1968/9. I wonder what was the legal issues here if any.

I have an image saved on my computer (unfortunately I can't remember where from to give credit) that shows the same paint scheme in use in New Zealand, except that the pole caps are also white, rather than the black on your example. I assume it's white, but it could also be yellow instead, which was a colour scheme later adopted by Australia.
