Levenshulme Traffic calming

Post by drpsg »

not sure if this is Furniture or roads, but it seems like planters have just been dumped in the middle of streets as a calming measure! Surely there needs to signage and lighting?

Long story short, Manchester City Council have completely cocked up a Low Traffic Neighbourhood scheme, probably because they have no interest in doing anything to reduce car dependence in the city.

See the Great Ancoats Street debacle for another classic example.

The execution of the idea is dreadful - did nobody think at the very least to put reflective strips on the boxes and alter the white lining as part of the project!?

They look legally questionable, not much different to someone obstructing the highway with a skip, for instance.

In Belgium and Holland they do it properly and have the planters on alternate sides of the roads, not in the middle of junctions deliberately blocking traffic.

They look abandoned! What would the legality be? There doesn't seem to be much signage or any reflective material on them ?

The planters have now been screwed down and had reflective strips added to them. So they look a little bit less like they've just been dumped in the middle of the road.

Looks like a bad idea how they are placed at an angle like that. Where do you start?
The design encourages drivers to drive over the pavement.
Creates a pinch point on the bend.
Encourages pedestrians to cross the road at a diagonal through them into the path of road traffic.
the list goes on..

Yeah that's awful.

Here's a better way of doing it:

Double yellow lines and one-way section to ensure sufficient room on the corner.
Fence so pedestrians realise when they're crossing the road
Narrow obstacle not a great big thing
Preceded by consultation and signing
A short initial period with temporary red and white plastic blocks before spending money on permanent works
Proper curves created

Worth reiterating it's a 6 month trial, so there's no point doing permanent works until after that period ends.

Surely some temporary "right arrow'' signs are in order.
Redruth, not so nice so the government decided to bypass it twice.

A lot of temporary signs were in order, the implementation has been abysmal. Not helped by a few locals who think it's their role to vandalise things.
