Traffic Sign Sizing

Post by TrafficHat »

The TSM suggests all sign sizing should be based on the prevailing 85th%ile speeds. However, in a greenfield site or should the road be substantially changing this data may not be able to be obtained until the scheme has been constructed. Other than using professional judgement and designing to proposed speed limits, how can a designer ensure that a sign size is legally enforceable prior to construction?

If you don't have 85th percentile speeds, use the road type - see Table A1.2 in Chapter 8 or column 2 in the table in Appendix A LTN 1/94. Also you can use the design speed where this is known or can be calculated - see Appendices A1.7 and A1.8 in Chapter 8 Part 3 for temp signs.

Appendix E in Chapter 7 now.
Patience is not a virtue - it's a concept invented by the dozy beggars who are unable to think quickly enough.

Also, (used to be) one of the two bits of Chapter 2 in the public domain.
