I believe the Ashford Outlet has different delivery routes, so each group of shops/units will have a different colour lorry associated with it.
The routes diverge when you get closer to the outlet.

Similar thing in Brighton and Hove, although they direct traffic to different industrial estates.
Although only older signs still have them, and there isn't a huge amount of them left.

I think a few places have colour coded signs.

The Multimodal Gateway area in Widnes also has the same type of thing, though largely using coloured diversion symbols.

I thought there used to be a large blue bordered (the current Halton commercial areas version, not the now-obsolete 'proper' type) sign with a legend on it, but I can't seem to find it in either my photographs or on GSV, so I might've made that bit up!

Those travelling away from you are red-shifted

Those coming towards you are blue-shifted

Barnstaple has something similar - its 5 industrial estates are signed with 5 different colour lorries.

The problem is where the white lorry appears on a white background, like here.

Seems that the W lorry has faded over time as in 2008 it was orange.

As soon as I saw the title of the thread I thought of Ashford.

Each lorry is for a different industrial estate.

That's a system devised by someone who doesn't suffer colour blindness. Surely it would be wise to add the letters S, E and W into the lorry symbols for those who can't easily tell the colours apart.

And to use black background signs for HGV routes, and ensure they've got a DfT approval for the use of HGV symbols outside of the prescribed purposes...

The Dutch number their industrial zones - see here. Gives a lot more flexibility than just red and blue.

The signs have been there as long as I can remember, so if designed today no doubt they would have the letters added to them - and be on a black background. :-P
