Counties on UK road signs

Post by Norfolktolancashire »

On my travels I noticed this sign on the A38 Plymouth bypass westbound just prior to the Tamar Bridge.

I cannot recollect any other sign showing a county as a destination. Country yes, eg, Scotland.

Putting aside the fact that some people class Cornwall as a separate country, where else does this occur?

Cornwall isn't a separate country ffs.

And signs for Scotland are usually uppercase.

But no, I've never seen counties as a destination on road signs.

I can't recall a time I've seen a county on a road sign (as a destination). Except London.

...which isn't a county! "Greater London", if that ever appeared on a sign, would be.

“SCOTLAND” is used in the same way that regional destinations - “NORTH WALES”, “The NORTH”, etc, are used. I guess “CORNWALL” would be the consistent way of doing this, but I think it would be unusual.

Regional destinations as "Mid Wales" and "North Wales" here. Don't you just love the consistency.

I'm sure I've seen a "Yorkshire" somewhere, but I don't recall where (on the A1?) but not sure if that is regional or county?
Let it snow.

You would be surprised how many Cornish deem the county as a country separate from England!

And when they require a passport to cross the Tamar and have a seat on the UN, I'll consider it as such. Not a day before.

Regardless, most don't think that and it's an eccentric POV helped along by the internet age, where loud minorities can come across as more numerous than they actually are.

Last time I went between France and Belgium, I didn't need a passport.

Last time I looked, the Vatican City was not a member of the United Nations.

We don't need a passport to cross into Wales and it doesn't get a seat at the UN but no-one disputes that it's a country.

Fair does. Liverpool's a country then.

Not sure I’ve ever seen it on the A1. Maybe somewhere up in the Pennines?

Either way - it’s not a regional destination because there’s a very specific list of those. It would just be wrong.

"Saltash" and "Liskeard" probably don't mean much to many British motorists and the Plymouth people are probably sick of grockles getting off too soon. Solution - since most of the occasional travellers on that road are going to somewhere in Cornwall and they know vaguely that their desination is in Cornwall, adding "Cornwall" to the sign probably does not cost much and certainly does not really add any clutter to the sign.

The German solution would be to have "Bodmin" on the sign because that is the end point of the A38 (where it joins the A30).

Road marking on the A629 in Central Halifax offers:

Always makes me laugh, Lancashire being marked on the road as if "here be dragons".

There's hundreds of signs that say "Bristol" on them...

Indeed, not only a city, but it's own county too.

If that's the path we're going to head down, then so are Leicester, Nottingham, Derby, Swindon, Stoke-on-Trent, Milton Keynes, Blackpool etc etc etc....

It is a ceremonial county and a unitary authority. So is Cornwall.

I didn't think it was the path we wanted to head down and I wasn't leading you down it. Isn't Bristol unique in its position as city and ceremonial county?

Back to the original question, does this count?
