"Do This" arrow pointing at STOP and GO signs (1927)

Post by TS »

I've just come across this fascinating photo of the A35 at Iford Bridge, the Bournemouth/Christchurch boundary, dated 1927.

The sign really fascinates me: RAC-branded, it seems to have an arrow with the legend "DO THIS", pointing to either the STOP or the GO roundel.

I wonder if the chap with his hands on his hips operates it, or if there is some form of automation? Has anyone come across such a thing before?

I'm pretty sure the chap is wearing Scout uniform, and there's a sign in the background saying "camp" so my guess is this is a temporary arrangement to manage traffic at the start or end of a scout camp on the recreation ground, so it's probably manual. (There's a Scout HQ there today, so could be a place they've used for camping historically.)
