Longest pedestrian crossing

Longest pedestrian crossing
I'm wondering what the longest pedestrian crossing in the country (+ in Ireland and the other isles) we can find?
Also, what's the longest light controlled vs. zebra, what's the longest kerb-to-kerb (i.e. not including crossings with a refuge) & longest single phase crossing.

Re: Longest pedestrian crossing
Not sure if it's the longest but I always find this one to be quite a long one when you take into account the lane count and hatching area in the middle. Find it unnerving too when crossing it during busier periods. I also think that would be better as a countdown Pedex rather than a Puffin so pedestrians get some feedback when crossing like this one as its longer than normal.
Re: Longest pedestrian crossing
Are you referring to one carriageway or a does a ped crossing across two count?
This setup in Leeds on the A6120 is a fair walk and for bonus points it's a 70 mph road.

Re: Longest pedestrian crossing
Diagonals, as in London, increase the distance to 1.6 times the width of an S4.

Re: Longest pedestrian crossing
There's a crossing spanning 5 lanes here (or 7 if you count the 2 lanes on the opposite carriageway, and 8 if you count the uncontrolled left turn lane - I think it really only qualifies as 5 given the crossings are separate but still quite long)

Re: Longest pedestrian crossing
The max permissible length of a pedestrian crossing is 15 metres, so it ought to be impossible to find ones longer than that (can't find the source). However it may be possible to find cycle crossings longer than that.
https://present.brighton-hove.gov.uk/do ... 290/Valley These planned works include some very wide crossings on the Southern end, crossing over 5 lanes, a cycle lane & a narrow median all in one go - maybe 17m total.
For a long zebra crossing - this one comes to mind.
https://www.google.com/maps/@50.8256516 ... 384!8i8192 Its bang on 10 metres wide, really ought to have some build outs
This one I measured to be a smidge over 16 metres.Jonathan24 wrote: ↑Sun Feb 13, 2022 23:24 There's a crossing spanning 5 lanes here ...

Re: Longest pedestrian crossing
If Google is accurate the diagonals at Oxford Circus are getting on for 30 metres.

Re: Longest pedestrian crossing
A 4-lane zebra crossing. Very rare in the UK. It's common in my country however.

Re: Longest pedestrian crossing
Diagonal crossings tend not to have dropped kerbs, so the crossing distances don't have to be measured for signal timings at the same 1m/s speed as for usual crossings. For this reason the pedestrian stage don't have to be even longer than they already are. Technically speaking then we might say that the diagonals aren't technically pedestrian crossings, as they don't have the requisite dropped kerbs.
Re: Longest pedestrian crossing
If 15 metres is the maximum length, this one must be very close to the limit.

Thankfully this death trap on a 40 limit D3 has now been removed (albeit it's now a giant signal junction on a 30 limit D3 instead):

Re: Longest pedestrian crossing
That should have traffic lights in my opinion. I thought these multi-lane zebras were only found in my country.
Speaking of that, something that annoys me is when local authorities put speed bumps, on a busy 4-lane road, to make a zebra crossing "safer", at the expense of creating unnecessary congestion.

Re: Longest pedestrian crossing
It's not just in your country as I see quite a few multi-lane zebras when we drive to Lithuania to visit SWMBOs family and friends, such as this one in Klaipeda.WhiteBlueRed wrote: ↑Tue Feb 15, 2022 06:33 That should have traffic lights in my opinion. A few have been converted to light controlled crossings, such as this one.

More may have been converted now, as it's 2½ years since out last visit due to Covid.

Lithuania is a former Soviet country, so that makes sense. I mean that these are rare outside former Soviet countries.

Re: Longest pedestrian crossing
The two crossing the four-lanes here have 16m crossing distances, and this one is pretty much the same. They're just springing to mind because they're ones I've paid some attention to lately, but I doubt distances like these are that unusual thinking about it.
This one is 22m, but is another diagonal. This one in Glasgow was brought to my attention with the longest row of studs being 21m, and this one also in Glasgow, albeit with a central reservation (but running as one phase) is 24m, but non of these are clearing the 26m of the diagonals at Oxford Circus mentioned earlier.

The old LTN 2/95 used to advise that a stagger was used on a stand-alone signalised crossing if the crossing was going to be longer than 15m, but I'm not sure the length kerb-to-kerb of a crossing was covered in the regulations, is it this you're thinking of? There's a stud-to-stud width specified in the regulations, though.
Do you mean that a reduced invitation to cross can be used on the diagonal crossings to off-set the longer intergreen due to the longer distance on a diagonal crossing? While I can see the benefit in reducing the green man time to hide some of the intergreen time providing the green man time wasn't stupidly short, I'd be hesitant to reduce the intergreen as well just because it's a diagonal crossing. It's just got me thinking though, if I recall correctly, all of the diagonal crossings locally to me have a fixed all-round invitation to cross time on both the 'regular' and diagonal crossings, and then have an intergreen that's inevitably going to be based on the diagonal crossing. I don't think any use on-crossing, even on the regular crossings.ChrisH wrote: ↑Mon Feb 14, 2022 11:34Diagonal crossings tend not to have dropped kerbs, so the crossing distances don't have to be measured for signal timings at the same 1m/s speed as for usual crossings. We found this intimidating in Florida when we were staying near there in 1993, looks about the same now.

Not sure if private property counts, but this is essentially 4 lanes long.
