Large flag signs
I couldn't title this something like 'Largest flag signs?' as I didn't get out and measure them (a virtually impossible task of course!) but these at Brogborugh really are massive brutes. Any more monsters like this out there?
Re: Large flag signs
as an aside should those be A507 rather than (A507) AFAIK that is the start of the A507

Compare to the size of the car and the fact it's facing a country lane.

Re: Large flag signs
That's an interesting layout to make turning right out of the lane a bit safer. We visited Castle Howard a few years back but were heading towards Strensall so didn't need to make the right turn onto the A64.Conekicker wrote: ↑Sun Feb 27, 2022 11:37 https://www.google.com/maps/@54.072962, ... 384!8i8192

Re: Large flag signs
This is because the big brains at NH appear to think all trunk road signs need to be 300mm x-height regardless of the application.Conekicker wrote: ↑Sun Feb 27, 2022 11:37 https://www.google.com/maps/@54.072962, ... 384!8i8192

A personal favourite is this: https://goo.gl/maps/sWSRCbXBtHVD6vfd8 - approach vehicle speeds <10 mph.
To return to flag signs, these are ridiculous too:

No, it's because NH's contractors employ monkeys, errm competent designers, who are anything but competent. The NH staff who know about signing know this very well but are, sadly, not in the decision chain when it comes to appointing the contractors and their monkeys.Bryn666 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 28, 2022 15:49This is because the big brains at NH appear to think all trunk road signs need to be 300mm x-height regardless of the application.Conekicker wrote: ↑Sun Feb 27, 2022 11:37 https://www.google.com/maps/@54.072962, ... 384!8i8192

Becomes one and the same really, if procurement disbars actual technically competent people vetoing incompetence then what is the point?Conekicker wrote: ↑Tue Mar 01, 2022 14:22No, it's because NH's contractors employ monkeys, errm competent designers, who are anything but competent. Re: Large flag signs
Another large flag sign akin to Bryn's along the East Lancs rd. How many flag signs are found along the mainline of a motorway? surely not many

Re: Large flag signs
The ones at this roundabout on the A570 always strike me as being too big, though the ones for the two A570 arms are replacements and are smaller than the originals.
It's not just the flag signs on that stretch though, some of the ADSs seem far too big, too.

Re: Large flag signs
Ex trunk road with an ex-70 limit therefore the signs must be big even when in reality it makes them bigger than the actual carriageway itself. This lack of logic in sign design and simple unthinking defaulting to "bigger = better" baffles me.traffic-light-man wrote: ↑Mon Mar 07, 2022 09:57 The ones at this roundabout on the A570 always strike me as being too big, though the ones for the two A570 arms are replacements and are smaller than the originals.

Re: Large flag signs
These ones at the end of the slip road from Junction 13 of the M40 seem large to me as this junction has a history of vehicles overshooting due to the relatively short distance of the slip road.

Re: Large flag signs
They're not even trying to be large compared to the ones at the next junction south (see my post a few up from here).Worcestershire Wolf wrote: ↑Mon Mar 07, 2022 20:13 These ones at the end of the slip road from Junction 13 of the M40 seem large to me as this junction has a history of vehicles overshooting due to the relatively short distance of the slip road.

Re: Large flag signs
Having been thoroughly slapped for the unlawful chequerboards I see they've finally just gone with sensible larger conventional signs. The effect of the chequerboards was to disorientate drivers and cause even more overshoots.Worcestershire Wolf wrote: ↑Mon Mar 07, 2022 20:13 These ones at the end of the slip road from Junction 13 of the M40 seem large to me as this junction has a history of vehicles overshooting due to the relatively short distance of the slip road.

Re: Large flag signs
This sign - even disregarding the letter height - looks absolutely ridiculous.
There's too much information on the sign to clearly parse as a driver IMO.
The way Western Australia (and typically in other states as well) deals with it is to use separate panels for each colour and I find that's really helpful, and looks a lot neater - example: https://goo.gl/maps/7Et6SsGRXGUaU8cE7
This example also shows a unique WA approach where the main blue panel has 'Raceway' and then the two different raceways are listed below with distances.

Re: Large flag signs
The signage at the whole approach is a complete mess. On a point I always make, what's the point of even having flag signs on a junction like this where by the time you can read it, it's too late to safely change lanes?crazyknightsfan wrote: ↑Thu Mar 17, 2022 01:02This sign - even disregarding the letter height - looks absolutely ridiculous.

Re: Large flag signs
It's an absolute state, complete with a map-type direction sign for tourist destinations after the point where the lanes have split to go in different directions, total overload of destinations on the various signs, and a lane allocation sign where the destinations and restriction roundel don't match the ones shown on the map-type ADS.MotorwayGuy wrote: ↑Sun Mar 20, 2022 11:21The signage at the whole approach is a complete mess. You arguably need just a lane allocation sign at the point the road leaves the roundabout, with all the destinations shown, or even better, a gantry with destinations listed above each lane.

Re: Large flag signs
I notice that the lane marked "local traffic" is the only one with a primary destination signed. Which to be honest is wrong too - if you wanted the A421 to Bedford you should have joined it at the previous junction, and if you missed it your best option is to turn round, so it shouldn't be signed here. Apart from that, the A507 shouldn't be in brackets, and the right turn should be a thicker line as it's the only classified road...Chris5156 wrote: ↑Sun Mar 20, 2022 11:55It's an absolute state, complete with a map-type direction sign for tourist destinations after the point where the lanes have split to go in different directions, total overload of destinations on the various signs, and a lane allocation sign where the destinations and restriction roundel don't match the ones shown on the map-type ADS.MotorwayGuy wrote: ↑Sun Mar 20, 2022 11:21The signage at the whole approach is a complete mess.
