Table Map

Post by SteveA30 »

Hard to decide whether here or Street Furniture is the right thread.
I wandered into a curios shop, not looking for or intending to buy anything. I'm not one for impulse buying either so, 5 seconds after seeing this, I snapped it up.

No date on the map so, what is the consensus? Various bypass clues, too small to see. I can't post at original size, as it is more than 508kb

My eyes aren't really good enough to see it - no obvious motorways though. Is the Barnet Bypass or Great Cambridge Road down to the roundway built?

Yes, it has Barnet bypass and also.Welwyn. Chichester, Chelmsford, Colchester, Egham, Bagshot, Basingstoke, Twyford, Dartford 1st, Lenham. Reading seems to have the red A4 still through the centre. The early bypass is brown but, there are no numbers on either section. Could be a mistake though.

Have a look through Network changes - 1950s and its attendant pages for other decades - they're designed to help in situations like this.

Other obvious things to look for are numbers that changed in the 1935 Road numbering revision.

Markyate and Ashford from 1957 are not there. There is nothing from the 40's on this map but, Caterham and Sompting from 1939 are there. So, early 50's I guess. Chichester isn't on the Network Changes but, is on the table map.

Chichester was a 20s road, so that makes sense...

1946 has both old and rerouted A4 in Reading in red. So does the 1930 OS. However, the A555 runs past Barnet and the A500 past Watford. Wiki refers to renumbering there 'around 1954'. This would suggest early 50's. The brown A4 in Reading may have been an error in one specific year only.

The '51 Barts atlas has the A555, but the '53 doesn't - so a little bit earlier than '54 I suspect.
