Re: New project for 2018 - OS One Inch 7th Series map coverage

Post by M4Simon »

I've just returned home from a couple of weeks in Yorkshire. I've replaced the battery on my laptop so it now boots up again, and I've had a chance to check the revision number of Sheet 122 - Melton Mowbray that I picked up in a second hand bookshop in Wetherby for 25p. It turns out it is the A revision which as far as I can see is one we do not have.

Having had a go with the tutorial before I went away, I'm going to have a crack at scanning this one. I'm also going to try and redo the Snowdon sheet (107B) - I've never been happy with the stitched map I created before as the gridlines are not straight. Hopefully c2R's tutorial will help me get it right this time.

Fantastic - yes, I agree that we don't seem to have 7th-122-A

Let us know if you need any help!

Three more sheets have been uploaded today. They are:

1954
Sheet 179 (Bournemouth) New Popular Revision E

1965
Sheet 170 (London SW) Revision B

1972
Sheet 60 (Glasgow) Revision B/*/*

Whilst I love all three maps as they all have some great things to see on there, I particularly like the state of the M8 on the Glasgow sheet...

Did it really open with the northwest section of the inner ring incomplete?
How would you like your grade separations, Sir?
Big and complex.

Yes, it really did open in four bits between 1970 and 1972.

Two more Seventh Series sheets were added yesterday for the eagle-eyed amongst folk!

They are:
1957
Sheet 122 (Melton Mowbray) Revision A

1962
Sheet 107 (Snowdon) Revision B

...and they're thanks to M4Simon for testing out the instructions for Adding a map to SABRE Maps, who scanned them both on a domestic A4 scanner and was able to produce these great maps for us.

As mentioned on the SABRE Facebook page, Sheet 122 has a wonderful example of post-war OS redacting of "secret" information - as not only is Melton Mowbray airfield missing (bar just the word "airfield"), but the redactors have also managed to remove the section of B6047 that goes across the airfield! Not only that, but it means that we now can add that sheet to the list of sheets where we have every revision ever printed online and freely available.

The process of adding a map to SABRE Maps can seem quite complex, and offputting for people looking at how they can help; but actually the vast majority of steps are either quite simple in themselves, or have had tools written to make them simple to complete.

The process itself can be split into several tasks, of various levels of difficulty. This guide will look at a simple level at the various stages in the process, with links to more in-depth information about each stage. It should be

Where is the 'Like' button on this forum?

It took a bit of effort to get the first one (122) scanned as I ended up doing it twice (top tip - allow plenty of overlap!) but the second one was much quicker and worked a treat. I'm grateful to c2R and Steven for their help. I wouldn't describe myself as a graphics specialist, so if I can do it, so can you.

The guide is pretty good now, and every time someone new has a go and gives feedback, we can make it even better. The trouble-shooter section is very useful.

I'll give a like, thanks for the scanning.

The Melton Mowbray sheet also shows the future proofing for the A563 New Parks Way between the new housing estates south of A50 on the west side of Leicester.

It's been a while since we added any new One Inch Seventh Series maps, hasn't it??

Well, to rectify that, one new sheet has gone live this evening on the 1973 layer - Sheet 168 (Winchester) Revision B/*.

This is the last sheet but one to go live from the 1973-74 final few One Inch revisions, but we'll all have to wait a little for the last sheet (Cardiff, Revision D) as it doesn't drop out of copyright until 1 Jan 2024!

Carrying on on the Seventh Series theme, the following sheets have just gone live on SABRE Maps, adding to the largest georeferenced collection of freely available Seventh Series mapping in the world, available on this very website:

* Sheet 78 (Newcastle-upon-Tyne) Revision D/*
* Sheet 167 (Salisbury) Revision B/*
* Sheet 169 (Aldershot) Revision B/*
* Sheet 175 (Okehampton) Revision B

That's every edition of the Okehampton sheet now online; and a bunch of other fun things to look at on the other sheets as well - for example, Newcastle city centre immediately before the Central Motorway East, and a three-quarters built Basingstoke for a start.

Anyway, it turns out that the 1972 revision of Sheet 180 (The Solent), which is a brand new full revision (C) at that date doesn't have a 1972 copyright as we thought. It has a 1971 one. So, that's now been added to the relevant SABRE Maps layer this evening.

The second batch of 1971 One Inch maps has now been uploaded, with one more to come in the next few days with any luck.

This lot are all from the OSGB Seventh Series:
* Sheet 86 (Redcar and Whitby) Revision B/*
* Sheet 165 (Weston-super-Mare) Revision B
* Sheet 174 (Bude) Revision B
* Sheet 189 (Land's End) Revision B

This now adds the last three to the list of Seventh Series sheets where we have every revision ever printed online, adding to our position as the world's largest georeferenced repository of Seventh Series sheets (as well as many of the other series we carry).

And of course, the fact that Cheddar appears on the WsM sheet in no way allowed me to get a bunch of cheese puns onto the SABRE Facebook page...

The last three maps in the current pipeline for 1971 Seventh Series maps have now been uploaded, which are:

* Sheet 168 (Winchester) Revision B
* Sheet 169 (Aldershot) Revision B
* Sheet 179 (Bournemouth) Revision C

This adds the Winchester and Bournemouth sheets to those we have every revision of online.

The maps we're missing from 1971 are currently the below, so if people would consider hunting through their map collections, and scanning them (or lending them to us to scan), it would be appreciated.
* Sheet 61 (Falkirk and Lanark) Revision B/*
* Sheet 78 (Newcastle upon Tyne) Revision D
* Sheet 100 (Liverpool) Revision C/*/*
* Sheet 102 (Huddersfield) Revision B/*/*
* Sheet 167 (Salisbury) Revision B

Given that we already had every map from 1970 online, tonight brings the final few maps from 1969 online, meaning that we get another nice green square in the "year" column.

This last batch are:
Sheet 55 (Perth and Alloa) Revision B
Sheet 75 (Dumfries and Gretna) Revision B/*
Sheet 76 (Carlisle) Revision B/*
Sheet 154 (Cardiff) Revision C/*
Sheet 171 (London SE) Revision B/*

Near the edge of one of these sheets is one of my favourite temporary motorway terminals. Can you find it?

And those of you who are super-observant will also notice that some of the sheets on the One Inch 1969 layer have new versions from cleaner originals as well. There's 100 SABRE Maps points (redeeemable exclusively for magic beans) available to anyone who can name all five sheets with the new versions.

I'm guessing you are meaning the M20, although the M90 might just make it onto the Perth sheet at Dunfermline.

It's perhaps not said often enough, but the hard work that Steven, Ritchie and helpers have put into the maps over the last decade or so is simply incredible, and an amazing resource. And yes, I am buttering you up for a little request! Can we please, please, please have the Dundee & Aberdeen sheets added to the base Seventh Serier layer, I forget the precise reasons why these weren't added originally, but I'm sure there must be suitable copies available now. Shetland would be nice too, but it's not so obvious! I'm not always looking for specific dating evidence, sometimes just having a more general look at the older maps, and it is a little frustrating to have to go searching for the right layers for these bits of Scotland. It also probably looks a bit rubbish to people new to Sabre Maps. Thanks!

I did mean the M90 at Dunfermline! Most mapping shows the junction as a roundabout, but actually it just turned instantly into tat down a little temporary access road that's mostly still there.
It's perhaps not said often enough, but the hard work that Steven, Ritchie and helpers have put into the maps over the last decade or so is simply incredible, and an amazing resource.
You're welcome! It is an awful lot of work, but it's definitely turned into a labour of love. Just imagine what we could do with more resources though!

I can do, yes. The reason they weren't added is because back when that layer was being put together, all sheets hadn't dropped out of copyright, and of course we were also still hunting for a copy of every sheet. And the reason I haven't done it yet is twofold: regenerating the tiles on that layer will take quite a number of hours to complete, and I haven't actually worked out which revisions ought to go on there long-term.

However, the frustration of searching through layers to find the right one is exactly the reason why the SABRE Maps Sheetfinder exists. Pick your scale first on the left hand side, then click on the part of the world you're interested in using the map in the middle, and all the maps we have of that location at that scale appear on the right hand side. You can then click on the one you want, and it takes you to the centre of that map sheet.

That being the case, then, might it be an opportunity to revise the whole layer (and possibly even the way it is generated - I have no idea how all the backroom stuff works, I'm just very happy that it does, but could the layer be created by adding other layers together, rather than generated individually, so that when a new map was added the 7th layer was automatically updated?). Including those maps which are 'in the pipeline' 1958-61 seems to be the period when the bulk of sheets were printed / revised, although a handful would need to be earlier. This would largely be the pre-motorway era, which would probably be an interesting snapshot.

I'm sure I've mentioned this before, but it would also be nice to replace the terrible scans I did back in the early days of Sabre Maps - I think all of them have got replacements on the annual layers now. 36 Fort Augustus, 37 Kingussie and 45 Sound of Mull.

Unfortunately each layer has to stand on its own - it's not possible to do anything clever like this. Whilst we don't have to regenerate every single map tile when we make a change, we do have to regenerate any changed areas - which includes relevant blank areas.

I think you're probably right with the appropriate date - as the last sheets were printed in 1961 it would be nice to be able to do every sheet that was the "current" sheet on 1 Jan 1962. However, maps in the pipeline are basically where the relevant map has been scanned and stitched, but still needs georeferencing before tiling. It's something that's a simple job to complete with the toolsets that have been created, and literally just involves clicking on gridsquares across the map image so that the tiling tools can do their magic.

So if anyone reading this has a spare half an hour, and can click on an image, please shout up! That way we can get the pipeline maps online much quicker.
I'm sure I've mentioned this before, but it would also be nice to replace the terrible scans I did back in the early days of Sabre Maps - I think all of them have got replacements on the annual layers now. 36 Fort Augustus, 37 Kingussie and 45 Sound of Mull.
:laugh: :laugh:

It's certainly on my radar to replace map originals with cleaner copies where we have them now, so yes, they could be replaced (as long we we have those cleaner originals). The new originals need to go back through the georeferencing processes though as if they're entirely new maps - there's no way to shortcut that.

Tonight sees the remaining Seventh Series maps from 1968 uploaded, so that's another year that's been marked "green" in the relevant Coverage Project.

* Sheet 103 (Doncaster) Revision C
* Sheet 112 (Nottingham) Revision C
* Sheet 143 (Gloucester & Malvern) Revision B
* Sheet 144 (Cheltenham & Evesham) Revision B
* Sheet 161 (London NE) Revision B/*

And on the subject of the Coverage Project going green, that's now every revision ever of sheets 144 and 161 now online, taking that particular total to 68 sheets with every revision published live on SABRE Maps.

So, what do folk see on this lot?
