1966 OS Quarter Inch

Post by Steven »

Two new maps have been uploaded to this layer today:

* Sheet 3 (Northern Scotland) - Revision B
* Sheet 14 (East Anglia) - Revision B

Some interesting bits and bobs appearing on these two; such as the brand new (then anyway!) A896; a bit more A1(M) and a strange loop off the A1 Alconbury Bypass.

On the subject of the last one, was the old road really still classified as an A road after the bypass was opened?

It's the old route of the A1, with the straight route being the new TOTSO-killing bypass.

Looking on the 10 mile mapping:
'64 (both) - via the original route
'65 (both) - both routes shown
'66 & '67 - only new route shown

I'd imagine the QI map and '65 maps were done with the bypass in an advanced state of construction (rather than the construction state of the Revision A QI mapping), but not open, so showed both.

And to mix things up a little from the One Inch maps that have gone online recently, two more maps have been added to this layer today.

They are:

NE England (revision B/*)
Southern England (revision B)

There's some interesting changes on this scale - we've not seen the Severn Bridge before (although it was marked as under construction in 1964), or the A1(M) and A66(M) combination near Darlington (though again, they're marked as under construction in the 1964 map).

Enjoy, and see what else there is to find!
