Highway Plans SABRE Maps layer

Post by Steven »

Some of you may be aware of the rather wonderful "Redrawn Maps" layer on SABRE Maps - found within the Highway Plans layer group.

Thanks to Truvelo, a large number of his redrawn plans taken from his visits to various archives of various proposals around England have been georeferenced and added to Maps. I think they're brilliant!

For me, a particular highlight is to use them along with the Map Fader functionality, where you can see what actually transpired instead of these plans, sometimes finding that the gaps left for a road proposal are still there; other times that the growth of a town has completely overwhelmed the proposed line and so it would be impossible to construct today.

Anyway, there's two more been added to the layer over the last few days, the A130 Chelmer Valley Route from 1973, and the A34(M) (yes, really...) Wilmslow and Alderley Edge Bypasses from 1969. Both are somewhat different to what is there today...

This layer is excellent and I'm really impressed by the work that's gone in to get these online.

With regards to the fader, it can show other less significant reminders of the larger scale proposals. For example, the planned roundabout here had space left for it when nearby housing was built. Between Lawn Lane and Downsway is an area of half round grassland with a few trees. The fader reveals its true purpose. It can also be seen in Google Maps https://goo.gl/maps/NLxepcNRkZLsQuiW9 I wonder how many locals sit on the benches within this area not knowing the true reason for this open space.

Thanks again to Truvelo, there's now the proposals from the 1960s for Bolton Town Centre available on that layer.

Another addition today, thanks again to Truvelo.

It's the Bexhill - Hastings Bypass proposal from 1994.

Eeeesh, that GSJ at the top of St Peter's Way would, er, have been fun.

That explains why the road ended the way it did at St George's Road for 20 years.

But annoyingly the map doesn't go any further north. I wanted to see how Higher Bridge Street merged into the A666 which would probably have been another whopping great GSJ where the Mercedes dealer is.

This map shows the temporary terminus but by now the plan for that massive GSJ had been watered down into something more budget friendly.

That plan renders the dualling of Folds Road completely pointless, mind. Today there's an off-slip southbound (and since 2007, an entry) from it. The northbound exit slip to St Georges Road is just the old line curving around.

Added this morning, thanks to Truvelo's hard work at this, is the 1960s plan for the Lewes Inner Relief Road.

It's quite mad!

Thanks again to Truvelo, you can now enjoy the Lewes - Polegate improvement from 1993.

Would this have been a good thing or bad?

Lewes to Polegate scheme would be very, very good. The Lewes town centre dual carriageway relief road on the other hand would have been, well, wow... it would have changed this view somewhat: https://www.google.com/maps/@50.8734897 ... 312!8i6656

On balance, I think building the relief road to the south of the town was a much better idea.

And another of Truvelo's marvellous recreations has now been uploaded to SABRE Maps.

The Chideock Bypass proposal from 1993 is the latest unbuilt plan to receive the Truvelo treatment. What do we think? Would this proposal have been worthwhile both economically and environmentally? Would it have meant that sales of superglue in this part of Dorset would have been lower?

Another unrealised plan has been brought to life in SABRE Maps by Truvelo.

This time it's the Kidderminster, Blakedown and Hagley Bypass from the late 1980s/early 1990s.

Ah it had a tunnel, too ambitious to ever happen in the time frame given.

It makes the as-built Bewdley bypass make more sense.

The Bewdley Bypass as originally planned was to extend eastwards to the A449. Having it join the A456 near the safari park still makes Kidderminster a bottleneck. It was a missed opportunity.

Phew! Along with the bunch of One Inch mapping added today, there's another great plan from an abandoned proposal, once again drawn by Truvelo from his archive research.

Today's update is from 1994, and features the A303 Ilminster to Marsh improvement.

Following on from this Truvelo has drawn up the section to the west, the A30 and A303 Marsh to Honiton improvement from 1993.
