I'm sure climbing lanes were added to the A1(M) from Barton to Newcastle, which is a form of widening...
Initially two sections northbound, and later one section southbound (and possibly a third northbound?).
Which reminds me that a couple of northbound climbing lanes were added to the D2M M5 before being later absorbed into the more general widening.

M1 - J6A-10 - 2007
Later.
http://www.skanska.co.uk/Global/Sevices ... -Sheet.pdf says
"the scheme was completed at the end of 2008" .

I wonder if we can include when the M4, J3 to J2, had the almost-unused offside bus lane returned to general traffic use as a proper D3M around 2010

M1 J28-31 was never widened properly. It only got a Smart Motorway somewhere between 2015 and 2018, with J32-35A following soon afterward (the Tinsley Viaduct was converted from 2 lanes per direction to 3.) J31-32, which had already been widened, was given variable speed limits.
Also, the M1 widening J21-21A through LFE services has been left out!
Interestingly, despite 23A-24 being widened as late as the 1990s (including the site where the ill-fated BMI plane crashed), it was still fitted with LPS lighting.
Though roads may not put a smile on everyone's face, there is one road that always will: the road to home.
