B152 (NI): Not Defunct?

Post by Euan »

This is something that caught my attention while adding the Northern Ireland C45 to the wiki.

The list that I am working from lists the C roads as individual segments and one of the segments of the C45 is Steeple Road in Antrim. The from/to description of this segment refers to Oriel Road - where the C45 starts, as the B152. According to the wiki, the B152 in Antrim is no longer numbered as such following the arrival of the new A522 which broke the route into two parts. Apparently the number became defunct sometime in the 1970s. The latest map in SABRE Maps to show the B152 dates from 1961 and at this time it appeared to cover Oriel Road.

Is it possible that the B152 might not actually be defunct? If it isn't then it would form a bit of a dead end short of meeting the A522, but this does not seem unprecedented. The class III road list is linked to in the "Great C Road Hunt" thread of this forum.

Would anybody know more about the road?

From that it looks like the B152 is indeed not defunct. It could probably be assumed that the Station Road stump is still part of the B152 as well, even if it is not much use for through traffic. There is a similar case regarding the B820 in Kirkintilloch:

https://www.sabre-roads.org.uk/wiki/ind ... title=B820

Although on many maps it appears to now be defunct, some of the documentation from East Dunbartonshire Council still refers to it as the B820 despite the high street being severed by the arrival of the new A8006, now numbered A806.

From the SABRE Wiki: B820 :

The B820 originally followed the High Street through Kirkintilloch, meaning that the Glasgow Road 'bypass' followed by the A803 actually pre-dates 1922. In fact, the central section of the High Street, between Cowgate and Ledgate, and about a third of the overall length was actually a multiplex with the B757, relegating the B820 to the two
