A763 extension

Post by jon81 »

Hi, noticed a A763 sign in the Robroyston area of Glasgow,

suggesting that it may have been extended towards Kirkintilloch at some point, presumably to take over the B765. In the 2008 version of Google Maps, there are 3 more signs around M80 Junction 2 to suggest this as well.

Any ideas?

The signs at J2 of the M80 appear to have been corrected with the B765 number sometime in 2008-2012.

Note that the A803 is also signed and bracketed alongside the bracketed A763 number even though the B765 never actually reaches the A803. So, if the A763 did at some stage cover all of what is now the B765 it would have needed to have gone further to reach the A803, perhaps west along the B812 or along Woodhill Road and Wester Cleddens Road. The latter would explain the rather strange "dead-end" of the C188 (East Dunbartonshire) in Bishopbriggs as it would instead have been finishing on another classified road. However I haven't seen any other signage in the area to support this.

Also note that the A806 link to Kirkintilloch opened during the period when the signage at J2 of the M80 was corrected, so it is very much a possibility that the A763 may have formerly acted as a route for traffic from eastern Glasgow to Kirkintilloch which was deemed unnecessary following the completion of the new A806. It seems unlikely though given that the route has always been shown as the B765 on all mapping. It could just be a misinterpretation of the full extent of the A763 which itself is not particularly old, both in terms of the number and the actual road.

All very interesting.

From the SABRE Wiki: C188 (East Dunbartonshire) :

The C188 starts on the A803 in Bishopbriggs town centre and heads east along Springfield Road. It is initially two-way, to provide access to a delivery yard, but soon reduces to one-way westbound as it squeezes under the railway. The road remains one-way as far as the junction with Muir Street, from where it continues east, curving north east onto Menteith Avenue. This then comes to an end on Woodhill Road, which is apparently unclassified.

Hi, here are some proposed routes of the M80 and Bishopbriggs Relief Road (possible A763?) from a Geographia 1989 street atlas.

Most of this has been built, but show some alternative routes near Provanmill and Standburn Rd/Wallacewell Rd. The northern section ("Phase 5") is still proposed to connect to the A807 at Cole Road and link to the B819 Crosshill Road. Possibly there was a plan to extend the A763 all the way to the A807, making a Eastern and Northern orbital route of Glasgow?

Have a search for something called the "Glasgow Eastern Flank Expressway" or the "East Link Route", or even "East End Regeneration Route".

The Glasgow Motorway guys are your go-to people on this.
