Denton Interchange

Post by Truvelo » Sat Feb 22, 2020 16:34

The article for this junction shows it was junction 11 of the M66 whereas the M66 article shows it as J10 with J11 being the unbuilt George Lane extension. Which is correct?

Having looked at a couple of early 1990s maps, it's marked as J11.

I've changed this junction from 10 to 11. A-Z's showing the planned A6(M) have Bredbury as 12 so I've assigned 11A to the unbuilt junction in between. Can you have a look at the junctions north of Denton as I can't find any old mapping for this section, plus I believe it opened as M60 so never had M66 signs in place.

The A663 Broadway bridges were built in a previous contract, and had M66 chopsticks signs a few months prior to opening. They're still plated over with M60 to this day.

The A62 southbound entry also has coverplated signs.

The ADS at the A635 junction have holes in them.

These were for VMS that were never brought into use. Part of the grand MIDAS scheme. The entire eastern side has them, but these ones haven't been covered up. You can see where the holes for the amber flashing lights have been though.

There were four separate contracts, IIRC:

* M62 to A576 widening, which also involved turning the Three Arrows roundabout into a half diamond and back to a roundabout again.
* A576 to Woodhouses bridges.
* Woodhouses to A57 Denton.
* A576 to Woodhouses carriageway.

For a year or two, everything was complete from A57 to Woodhouses, with the completed motorway (with all lining present) just stopping dead, halfway up a hill. You can still faintly see the seam in the tarmac.

Woodhouses is just north of the River Medlock, about half way between the A62 and A635.

It still staggers me that it took until 2000 for this bit to be finished.

Indeed. The Esso garage which was on the east side of the A664, where M60 junction 20 currently sits, was closed in 1975 because it was on the line of the new motorway. The Shell garage on the other side, but closer to Victoria Avenue, carried on until the early 1990s (and at one point had pumps which would accept 50p pieces).
