Clock Tower Roundabout Telford

Post by Truvelo »

On this page in the Wiki there are two entries for the same junction - Clock Tower Roundabout and Donnington Roundabout. Was this junction ever known as Donnington Roundabout? The original GSJ plans shows it as Donnington Farm Interchange.

The only reference to the Donnington Roundabout name is on openstreetmap. I've looked on GSV and all the imagery, including that dating back to 2009 shows it as Clock Tower Roundabout.

Big and complex.

From the SABRE Wiki: Telford/Named Junctions :

elford has a large number of named junctions. The names tend to appear on advance direction signs.

Worse - this is unforgivable:

p.s. in answer to the original question, there is a Donnington Wood roundabout a bit further south - I think this is it, and therefore I've altered the wiki page.

There was a thing with 1980's Tescos and clock towers. Strangely the Tesco here is of a similar vintage and doesn't have one.

Well Tesco had a good excuse for this one at least - the last vestige of Manchester City Transport's Parrs Wood garage that formerly stood on the site.

Actually, at the right scale, the OS say:

The answer would appear to be that it has both names - much like part of Coven Heath Interchange being called Fordhouses Roundabout.

From the SABRE Wiki: Coven Heath Interchange :

Coven Heath Interchange is junction 2 of M54, and is located on the northern edge of the Wolverhampton urban area. It opened along with this stretch of M54 in 1983, and has seen three changes to the junction layout since the original construction.

It forms part of the currently signed route between M6 Toll and M54, and A449 to the north of the junction is a Trunk road.

The original roundabout, according to the National Street Gazetteer, is called

Good find, Steven - I checked various layers while trying to find reference but admittedly didn't check that one. I've updated the wiki page.

For additional amusement value, the National Street Gazetteer calls it...

DONNINGTON CLOCK TOWER ROUNDABOUT

(and yes, that's a direct copy and paste, hence the capitalisation)

If there's any doubt I always use the name shown on direction signs.
