Fr. N147 Poitiers To Limoges

A road to avoid in France. Some french peeps told me it was the worst cross country route in that country.... average journey time being between 2&half to 3 hours :o .

It starts off on a D2 but this strectch ends abruptly.
Image

Too far to go on this s2
Image

There is one more short section of D2
Image

Only a couple of these
Image

And 3 or 4 of these

And there was this roundabout built in a field yet not accessable by any road
Image

And there was miles of straight s2 road

Oh don't remind me!

I had to take a friend to Limoges Bellgarde Airport from Marnes (about 30 miles north of Poitiers on the D18/D37 north of the N147).

It's a foul N road, very reminisicent of the N138, now bypassed by the A28. Incidentally, the Saumur to Poitiers section of the N147 has been downgraded to the D347.

The Bellac Bypass will make the N147 more bearable, but I rather suspect what is needed is D2 all the way, bypassing smaller bottlenecks such as Lussac les Chateaux. About 1 mile was dualled last year to provide a very small overtaking section. More is needed!

EDIT: The Poitiers Bypass has only just been fully dualled, the sections between the N149 and A10 had some S2 sections that have just been plugged this year. The cones were lifted literally 3 weeks ago.

Also, the cloverleaf between the N10 (D910 on some signs now) and N147 was remodelled so some of the loops have been removed. One direction now has a warning sign of weaving traffic.

Its dire isn't it Bryn. Not sure about the Bellac bypass, it may be built... the signs for toulouse directed traffic up the D675 just before the town... I didn't take that route and soldiered on down the 147

I wanted to get from tours to limoges and from april next year the A85 autoroute will be opened from tours to interchange with the A71....and then it will just be a case of driving down the A20.
43km of the A85 is now open.

the A147 still runs from saumur to angers too.....isn't the angers motorway bypass to be opened soon on the A11 ?

I like the straightish S2's in France all the same..... I must be a gluten for punishment :D

Bellac Bypass is half open already for what it's worth.

As for Tours to Limoges, at the moment the only real route is the 147, which is why it's awful. The A10 south of Tours also badly needs D3 in my view.

A85, they've been building that for about 15 years now... the Bourgueil-Langeais section has been a local's joke really, it should've opened 10 years back...!

It took over an hour less to go via the a20/a85/d976 ...... even less I suspect if i'd have turned off the A85 and gone up to blois on the d765 & then the a10.

I've a lot to learn about the autoroutes... but there were big signs up saying the A85 would be fully opern by april 2008 I assure you  .

Here's the current end

I also note you had the exact same weather as us.

We were there a week ago, it was crap weather wasn't it! Never thought I'd need a sweater in that part of France, this time last year it was registering close to 40C on some days...

It was dire Bryn........ though I wasn't on holiday.
I went over tuesday, came back friday and only saw the sun heading back out of cherbourg.
& talk about damp... nowt like anytime back in the uk.
But on the up side, 2" of rain fell in Bourges on the 21st... and must have been a similar amount everyday where I drove and the roads coped so well with the drainage...thinking about it, I didn't come across any large puddles :o .

I wouldn't be surprised if the N147 is upgraded at some point; the routes France has been rapidly improving over the last 15 years or so are the main E-designated routes. The N147 is part of the E62.

Rolex,

I would be more than happy to contribute photos of autoroutes and routes nationales for Wikisara.

My only regret is I can't speak good French whatsoever, your English is far better than my French will ever be!

Thank you very much !

I will add this photos of N147 later. We need to create the page of N147 in Wikisara before.

Bryn 666, it isn't a problem to speak English. ( I need to speek (very well :D ) English for my studies (and the TOEIC !!).

So, if you have photos, there are some answers.

First, I can create a new subject in which every member can post photos for wikisara.

Or you can send me photos at nbelsylvain@aol.com.

Try N141 to Etagnac - D948 - D148 - D741 (Confolens Pressac Glencay) - D742 (Vivonne) -N10 to Poitiers.

I went most of this route (from Etagnac) coming back from holiday south of Limoges in 2005, which seemed more obvious than N147 as we were on the N21 so could bypass Limoges to the west.
It's typical dead straight French S2 and apart from the odd tractor, completely empty. :driving:

So what you are saying is that there is at least one road in France where it's like driving over here?

Talking of bizarre roundabouts, last year when I was in the Limoges region, me, my mum, gran and my gran's friend went looking for some medieval festival when we came across this roundabout in the middle of nowhere at the meeting of three unclassified roads.

Well folks,

Last report on this road was back in 2007, and having traveled last week 27th Oct 2020, I would advise it is just as atrocious still.

I unfortunately covered in two periods with a stop over at Belloc , and my first travel was around 17:00 from Limoges and it was raining , dark and full of heavy truck traffic. I would promote that unless you have a suicidal death wish, DO NOT travel on this road when in these conditions, dark and more so rainy.
The road is only two lanes with pathetic lane markings to indicate separation , even in daylight and dry ? ...so with this drizzle rain reflecting off the roads, the lack of any route lighting and constantly blinded by truck headlights, you are mainly driving blind and having to "guess" where the kerbside actually is , before you drive into the ditch.
The local, regional and government authorities should take a serious reflection on this dangerous road considering this is somewhat a "main artery" feeder between these two major cities Limoge and Poitier

The N147 is part of the RCEA and this is a state project by the looks of it so it's taking forever to complete. A large part of it, the now N249 (ex-N149) between Nantes/Cholet and Parthenay is in service, but the N149 down to Poitiers still needs a lot of work too. The N147 is still subject to studies, so it's years off being done.

The A10 is, as I whinged 13 years ago however, now being widened to D3M. Vinci Autoroutes are throwing money at the A10 like it's going out of fashion though.

They aren't really major cities though, Poiters has a population of 88k, Limoges 132k... Worcester to Oxford would be a reasonable British comparison. It's not that surprising to me that it's not had masses of money spent on it
