Singapore has always rationed cars with quotas, which are auctioned and ensure that cars are expensive. Now they are aiming for zero increase in the number of cars, although buses and good vehicles can increase.

Given the relatively small land area and high population this doesn't seem a terrible thing to me.

Re: Singapore cuts quota for extra cars to zero.
I cant say I am surprised. They already had road pricing when I went there in 1988. The main island is about 50% larger than the Isle Of Wight but has a population density of 20,194 per square mile compared with the figure for the IOW of 950 per square mile.
Imagine the IOW with a population of around 4.5 million instead of 130,000 and you get the idea, they also have a very good public transport system and taxis are reasonably priced so not having a car is no imposition.

Yet bizarrely they have a very good network of quasi-motorways on the island. It's not as if they hate cars, they are just being practical and accepting that those who need them take priority over those who want them. A lesson we need to learn here, given you have people in major cities still driving less than 3 miles to work.

Re: Singapore cuts quota for extra cars to zero.
An area 1.5 times that of the Isle of Wight is actually quite a large area to cover effectively with public transport. How does that compare with Greater London for area and pop density?
I'll do some googling later when I'm back on the PC rather than a small phone screen

These things are so much easier on a proper PC with tabbed browsing. Singapore is 285 sq miles with 20,200 persons per square mile.
The Isle of wight is a 148 sq miles with 950 persons per sq mile.
So Singapore is pretty much twice the size of the IoW.
The real surprise to me was Greater London
It's 606 square miles and has 14,500 people per square mile.
Who'd thought Greater London was four times as big as the IoW and twice the size of Singapore?
Just for **** and giggles you can also look at the West Mids and Manc.
The Messed Widlands is 348 sq miles with 8,230 people per sq mile
Greater Madchester is 493 sq miles with just 5,600 people per sq mile
Of course all these boundaries apart from Singapore and the Isle of Wight are totally arbitrary. Right that's more than enough stats for one morning.
Re: Singapore cuts quota for extra cars to zero.
Singapore is a Nation State made up of 1 main island and 60+ other smaller islands many of which are being enlarged by reclamation. Pulau Tekong is the largest of these and as I recall is a military base and nature reserve. Jurong Island is largely artificial and is home to the islands Petrochemical industry and is based on several small islands that were merged. Some of the smallest islands are uninhabited. Most can be reached by water bus system. The figures I gave where for the main island which is the only portion with a significant population and public road network. Pretty arbitrary in factComstock wrote:
