Freeway Heritage Listing

Post by RoadsMaps »

Melbourne’s Eastern Freeway is seeking Heritage listing status:

Are there any other limited access roads that people know of with heritage protection?
B110 is my local arterial.

Arroyo Seco parkway in LA is a National Civil Engineering Landmark, and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places

National Civil Engineering Landmarks sound a good idea. Could be a good thread.

The Eastern Freeway (now M3) between Hoddle Street and Bulleen Road was, is, and will continue to be, a great road - one of my favourites. When it opened in 1978 (just after my arrival in AU) it was impressively over-built/future-proofed, but that would be fully justified if ever the proposed 'East-West Link' were to be built.

Heritage protection? Not required: it just adds red-tape and bureaucracy, and anyway none of the planned or likely improvements or additions would alter the essence of what makes that section memorable.

Protection for some early UK motorway sections or features (the subject of many mentions on Sabre over the years) would be worthy. One or two of the remaining Owen Williams bridges and/or all of the M45 come to mind.

If we ever had a "Museum of Motorways" I'd definitely want an Owen Williams M1 bridge in the garden, they're beautiful structures (by the standards of motorways and beautiful).

Weren’t the M45 and M50 designated as heritage motorways some years back?

A number of motorway bridges are listed in the UK, e.g. the Humber Bridge

Well played. I meant the Severn Bridge, and then at the time I thought to myself "The humber bridge is listed too" and ended up typing the latter instead of the former!

Here's a nice dual carriageway from 1867 that I visited recently...
