AADT Across the continent

Post by Jayck »

Hi, I've been looking in vain for some comprehensive traffic data across the European road network but can't find much.

The E-Route network does a census every 5 years as you can see here: http://www.unece.org/trans/main/wp6/e-r ... _2015.html

However, the E-Routes often miss what I imagine are the busiest sections of road and I'm personally looking for the meaty stuff. Has anyone found anything more comprehensive? Data from France in particular would interest me. It would be good to finally be able to answer where the busiest section of road in the continent might be. Cheers.

Yeah, no luck unfortunately.

This is probably what you want for France:

https://www.data.gouv.fr/en/datasets/tr ... -national/

Several French départements publish AADT for their roads, too; ferreting around on data.gouv.fr will get you a bunch. "TMJA" and "trafics routiers" are the phrases to search for. They're all in slightly different formats - the French government has mandated that the départements start to use a common format, but as per usual no-one seems to have actually taken a blind bit of notice so far.

For Spain there is an interactive map, you can click on different segments to see the traffic volumes https://mapas.fomento.gob.es/mapatrafico/2018/

I would assume every country's transport ministry provides this information, somewhere!

A couple of relevant posts by ChrisZwolle at Skyscrapercity:
These are the busiest motorways in the Netherlands;

1) A4 The Hague (Prins Clausplein - Ypenburg): 249.000
2) A16 Rotterdam (Ridderkerk-Noord - Ridderkerk-Zuid): 239.000
3) A16 Rotterdam (Van Brienenoord Bridge): 229.600
4) A4 De Hoek - Hoofddorp: 228.200
5) A2 Utrecht (Utrecht-Centrum - Oudenrijn): 221.700
6) A12 Utrecht (Galecopper Bridge): 216.600
7) A10 Amsterdam (De Nieuwe Meer - Amsterdam-Oud Zuid): 215.100

This is excluding segments that are directly adjacent to any segments mentioned above. Both A16 locations are close to each other, but not directly adjoining and serve different traffic flows.

So there are basically six motorways that exceed 200,000 vehicles per day.
Not many roads in Europe carry over 200,000 vehicles per day. No motorway in Germany exceeds 200,000 vehicles per day. In Belgium, the only one is R1 at Antwerp. I believe the UK has only a single segment exceeding 200,000 (M25 west of London).

Further, Madrid's M-30 is the busiest verified motorway in Europe, as it carries over 300,000 vehicles per day. However some Moscow roads may also handle that much traffic.

The busiest road in the world is Ontario's Highway 401 in Toronto that carries up to 420,000 vehicles per day. No other motorway has been verified to carry more traffic than that, though there is one contender with no available data, the Marginal Tietê in Sao Paulo.

You didn't ask highest US AADTs, but here they are anyway (as of 2008):

I wish! My interest is admittedly at local/regional road level rather than national roads - I use the statistics to help routing on cycle.travel (basically, roads with few cars = better to cycle on). But AADT data for these roads is frustratingly hard to come by. There's some for France, Spain, the US, the UK (of course), Australia and New Zealand. Ireland has a bit. Most countries don't publish anything at all, or if you're lucky, just for the local equivalent of motorways.
