Isn't the PCH actually California State Route 1? US-101 is mostly further inland.

Yes it's route 1. I seem to recall we went on some of it in the US but seeing it from the coach wasn't quite the same, not sure if it was that bit or not though.

You can't think they won't repair it eventually. There's not really a tangible alternative route and Big Sur is pretty notable (especially as it's the nickname of the current macOS) and the tourist value for the scenery, drive etc would presumably help...
C, E flat and G go into a bar. The barman says "sorry, we don't serve minors". So E flat walks off, leaving C and G to share an open fifth between them.

Never argue with an idiot. They will bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

South of San Francisco between Las Cruces and Ventura there is a shared section that runs along the coast before splitting again. North of San Francisco the 2 roads converge at Leggett and from there to Crescent City its US 101 , sometimes confusingly referred to as the Pacific Coast Scenic Byway in Oregon and Washington State and Coast Highway in Northern California.

Highway 1 only opened in the 1930's as a tourist highway and as the article states washouts and wildfires have caused many closures over the years. Anyone in a hurry to travel from LA to San Francisco will use Interstate 5 while communities between Monterey and Santa Barbara are better served by US 101 which along most of its route is a decent D2 road.

Isn't Highway 1 used in the chase scene in Basic Instinct where Michael Douglas pursues Sharon Stone and narrowly misses being killed by a bus?

I believe so, they definitely listed Big Sur as a location.

It's a great car chase as it uses a popular tourist route and far more exciting than using an interstate.
