I was alerted to this on the I40 in Memphis on another forum and thought it was worthy of mentioning in this thread. There's a good photo of the break in the steel here.

I suppose this is as good a place as any to plug my "US interchanges" thread from a few years back. Ever wonder how many cloverleafs there are in the US? Or how many stacks there are in Texas? Step this way:

That's a bit more than a crack. Its a failed structural member on a joint that looks as if it has already been reinforced. If I were in charge I would be looking more widely for other problems.

The transferred loads onto other sections of the bridge raise some worrying questions too - the redundancy and factor of safety must be at the absolute limit with that. I'd be guessing the only real long term fix is to replace the whole thing but $$$.
