Re: Highways passing through a corridor where no previous road existed
One road in the Netherlands that is definitely a new road is the N302 between Lelystad and Enkhuizen which is carried by the Houtribdijk. It was originally planned as the eastern limit of the new province of Markerward, but even though the idea of reclaiming more land from the Ijselmeer was abandoned, the dyke itself formed a very useful link between the Province of Noord-Holland and the province of Utrecht bypassing Amsterdam.

In the USA the Chesapeake Bay Bridge/ Tunnel would count, prior to its construction getting between Philadelphia and Virginia Beach meant taking a ferry across Hampton Roads or a long detour via Washington and Baltimore.

In The north of Iceland, no road existed between Siglufjförthur and Olafsfjörthur until two new tunnels blasted through mountains, passing through a previously untouched valley. These tunnels & road were opens in late 2010.
In fact Siglufjförther could only be reached by sea or air in winter until the mid-‘70’s when a single lane tunnel & road was built coming in from the north west. The summer route was an un-paved road over the mountains.
