I also think opening of the replacement in mid-2020 is entirely plausible, as the I-35W Mississippi River bridge was replaced in a similar timeframe. I find it hard to believe that the initial promise to replace within six months could have originated with an actual engineer.
2020 is still very quick for replacing a structure of this kind of scale, at least in comparison to what we are used to. I agree that it probably was not an engineer who promised a replacement to be fully operational within six months of the original structure collapsing - the announcement did seem to come rather soon and there is no way any significant structural calculations or sufficient analysis of the site could have been carried out in such a short period of time. It may just have been to simply offer some reassurance to those affected by the collapsing of the bridge.

Looks like a fairly simple and sturdy design, and not too intrusive given the area it passes through. I like it.

Interesting that there appear to be only two lanes each way still - it's a very busy stretch of road and I'm surprised the opportunity hasn't been taken to at least provide space for three lanes, unless the hard shoulder is considered futureproofing.

I would think that the principle reason for not increasing the number of lanes is that eventually the autostrada bypass of Genoa, la Gronda di Genova, will be built, making the original route a local traffic only route.

Morandi bridge is the little straight bit NW of the Genoa Ovest junction, bottom right.

However, the new autostrada has been delayed for years due to the local M5S party blocking it.

If it had been built, it would have enabled the closure of the Morandi viaduct for major works.

What a bunch of idiots.

I would be impressed if the bridge was completed within a year, but hopefully it will not be rushed to try and keep to a deadline that may just be stated for reassurance. It is better for the bridge to be late and secure rather than on-time and faulty.

Somewhat so. I imagine it is a target, reasonably concrete, but a moveable one (hopefully the bridge will not be ).

If as reported the new bridge is made of steel much of it can be pre fabricated off site so site preparation and the supporting concrete and earthworks can proceed in parallel with the steel work.

This is a similar approach to that taken by the Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) after the I-35W bridge in Minneapolis collapsed in August 2007 and the new bridge was opened on Sept 18 2008. To do that they worked 24 hours a day for 7 days a week. Given the severity of winters in Minneapolis this was impressive enough until you remember this is a bridge with 5 lanes each way and a hard shoulder.

https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@44.97892 ... 6656?hl=en

In some ways this was a mirror image of the Morandi collapse and replacement. In Minneapolis the original bridge was steel and collapsed because the steel gusset plates were undersized and eventually failed. The new bridge is a post tensioned precast concrete box girder. The precast sections were manufactured in situ on the closed approaches to the bridge. No doubt the bridge builders were encouraged by the $200,000 per day penalty for completing late with a maximum bonus of $27 for finishing early - which they did :)

$27 isn’t much of a reward for finishing on time/early.

Maybe to you or me, but not to a corporation.

Maybe the low bonus was to discourage a "cowboy" job. (Am I allowed to say that, considering that Minnesota is in the Mid-West? :) )

Also, why $27, rather than $25?? Or $50, or $100?? 🤔

Is it a rounder number in Euro?

Early completion bonuses are often calculated as a percentage of the overall contract aren't they?

That would be in the order of .001%, surely?? They must have a higher percentage than that.

I'm sure Keith meant $27,000.

It's a big week.

Today, the first footings of the new bridge were poured at the site of the fallen tower 9:

Steelwork for the new bridge has arrived by sea:

And on Friday the demolition of the remaining towers takes place (at 9am CET) using 1300kgs of explosive. Local residents will be temporarily evacuated from 5am and the A7 autostrada will be closed from dawn until the afternoon.

No doubt there will be live footage and it will be on Youtube afterwards.

Sky News has just shown what looks like the main remaining part of the bridge being blown up.

Quite dramatic.

https://youtu.be/xm9rP7i4FkA it's live but you can scrub back to the point where the bridge goes, it's only a few seconds.
