This sign currently sits at the side of the B2112 about half a mile south of Ditchling.

Stating the obvious, I think it has seen better days ...

If you look back through the years on streetview, you can see the letters slowly dropping off this one in Stourbridge. Wonder how long it will be till they all fall off!

These two faded warning signs near Outlane most likely went up when the M62 round Huddersfield was built (early 1970s.)

Here are two examples from my lifetime. The first one is a direction sign at the bottom of the unclassified Carr Hall Road in Barrowford, Lancashire. Clearly old as predates the opening of the M65 motorway hence the 'Colne 'A56':-

Secondly remembered from my Uni days in Reading a candidate for manky gantry on the approach to the IDR. Even though the main sign looks to have been replaced the back lit one to the left and external lamp at the top look original. There used to be another back lit one on the actual IDR but this has been removed:-

The second is a particularly egregious example of a signing "solution" that appears to have been designed by a committee of half a dozen stubbornly independently minded individuals. I notice that GSV has photographed this inelegant comprehension-test of an array no fewer than 10 times. Most of the shots also demonstrate the ill-advisedness of the method chosen for illuminating the main panel: those "kitchen spotlights" more often than not cast daytime shadows onto the sign that further blur the message.

Especially weird being so old yet still having the junction identifier - these weren't in the regs until 1994 but that sign is from the early 80s by the look of it!

Yes, it's a rollerblind. Part of the alternative message on the blind can be seen at the top because it hasn't rolled all the way up. I doubt it works any more.

Fascinating. The concept of a rollerblind VMS never even entered my mind!
I wonder what would have prompted the need for a variable message? Tunnels are the usual suspect but was there an opening bridge or something that required diversion of traffic in the past?

Probably heavily rusted up. Roadsigns with moving parts need regular maintenance, and this looks like it's had none.

I spotted this mess on the A1(M) recently. Crudely patched numbers and blueness peeling off to reveal the substrate. How's it got in such a bad state? Nothing else along there has.

I'm a fan of the lorry route to Oxford panel on the left of the gantry there - so old that it's practially unintelligible.

This one on the A40 approaching Abergavenny on the A40 from Raglan. If you go back to previous street views, the triangle on the offside shows as having slipped down over the notice below since 2015 (and is still like this today) and the triangle on the nearside goes from red in 2008 to obscurity by 2018.
