This one in the Dingle area of Liverpool was worthy of stopping for a photo recently.

Glad that's still there.

So what's beneath the patching? North Wales looks as though there was nothing behind it originally. I assume M6 would have been on a green background. M56 would be more logical but wouldn't fit in the space so the sign was made prior to 1975 which explains the colour of the M6 patch.

It's certainly out dated and wrong. Chester surely should have A54 or A51 in brackets. The motorway should be M56 not M6 as this is where the A49 meets or is it pre M56? The milleage doesn't add up if thats the case.. Not sure what North Wales refers to but again you would be turning left onto the A54 to go to North Wales. I'm curious to know what is under the patch. The M6 bit is also a patch.

Not even sure if that's a standard sign?

Pre-1975. The "P" symbol was only used at the lay-by itself prior.

Pre-Worboys signs said "LAY-BY" with a distance.

Driving along the A540 recently and all the way along most of the signs are quite clean or newish until i got to this junction where they were all pretty much manky. Unusual for such a sign to be placed onto one post? I guess the wind drag and weight has took it's toll over the years..

I wouldn't want to stand in front of this leaning rusty specimen for long.

And this low bridge sign seems to have got so manky the height had to be patched back in. Unless the height changed somehow...

Another one of those classic A road signs on the A644 between the Mirfield and the M62 today.

Ten years ago you couldn't move around West Yorkshire without these being everywhere. Virtually every sign was ancient.

I found this photo I took in 2010. All it needs is a bit of a scrub.

Just to make sure nobody drives down this path.. no U turns down there ! I actually found a sign with some info on the back. It says BS 873 at the bottom. Does that date it?

BS 873 was the original sign standard before BS EN 12899 came in. It was issued in 1939, updated in 1959, 1970, and 1983 before being replaced in 2001 so it isn't helpful for dating signs I am afraid.

The sticker will have had a date on it but age makes that fade away.

Apologies for hijacking this thread.

It seems the country lanes of Cheshire are littered with small blue bordered local direction signs. A lot of them now very manky. In fact i find these more interesting than the class finger posts these days !

Indeed! Rural Cheshire has, even on main roads, largely escaped wholesale sign replacement.
