When these schemes are complete I feel it's time to reverse the mistake made in 1935 and re-allocate the A30 to the A303.

Judging by your username I'm guessing you haven't much experience of the south west area, but the two corridors have been this way for just about all the life of widespread motorcar use, so the whole direction network, both physical and in people's perceptions, is now long established. It would just be cost for no reason other than obsessive "number tidying".

The A30 has more or less, always been where it is. Same for the A303

I would have preferred the A30 to have taken the A303 route but, given the current situation, it would seem logical if the improvements are carried out, to extend the A303 to the M5. This would tie in with what happened at the M3 end, making the A303 the M3-M5 route throughout. Historically, I would hate that but it makes sense.

Actually, the A303 was originally located in SW London, and was only allocated to its current route (mostly!) in 1935.

From the SABRE Wiki: A303 (Vauxhall - Wandsworth) :

The original A303 was, like the other A30x roads, a short, urban A-road in south London.

The road started on the A302 Westminster Bridge Road in Lambeth and headed south past Lambeth Palace and along the Albert Embankment. At Vauxhall Bridge it turned away from the river to run along Wandsworth Road and past Clapham Junction station to end on the A3 to the east
