Probably "Menai Bridge", the English name for that village.

'Menai Bridge' is already on (a non-patched part of) the sign so I wouldn't have thought it would also have been on the line above. It may have been a spelling mistake that's been patched.

Random suggestion: perhaps it used to have Menai Bridge only (on the top line and the bottom line was blank), then it was patched over to put the Welsh name and Menai Bridge entered on the bottom line?

Is it actually patched? Looking back through the years on GSV, it looks like the seam in the sign face which has gathered some grime, but it doesn't look patched to me.

The real problem is the wrong typeface.

Phwoar. They're in surprisingly good nick - just need a clean.

Yes, there's nothing manky about them! Most signs in this thread are the same - not manky, just old.

Yes these are surprisingly in good condition considering their age.
Just south of the M56 at Stretton are these two and an old T junction sign within a mile of each other.
Perhaps the thread should be renamed manky / obsolete signs.

Those are classic, Rambo. I'd agree, the thread would be more suitably named 'Obsolete and manky' or similar.

Continuing with my burst of new-posting enthusiasm, one that I am sure must have been posted before https://maps.app.goo.gl/hdrhLLZcr2d5ubRX8 but it has deteriorated somewhat since the GSV car passed.

This sign https://goo.gl/maps/gH4opzdvdL8RJ76C9 on the A37 has been missing the top section since 2011, I know as that’s when I passed my test and I remember my first drive to Bristol and got lost at this roundabout!

Reported to council and highways multiple times and it’s still like this, missing the ‘Bristol’ section.

There are no signs on the roundabout directing traffic to Bristol either, so can be very confusing for people unfamiliar with the area.

Another warning sign. This one probably won't clean up as well as the others.

The Stretton sign was spotted on the floor in the vegetation. Not sure how long for as GSV hasn't been here since 2011 and i'd never driven here until last year.

However those who don't believe in magic  :D

One for Kevin Roads. Very faded old NSL terminals in Barmouth https://www.google.com/maps/@52.7208286 ... 384!8i8192

Thanks, Rambo, I'll have a look for them next time that I'm down there. They are really faded, aren't they? Almost completely white - it must be all that Barmouth sunshine.

Question for you, Rambo, as a Warrington/Runcorn frequenter: do you remember a blue (motorway-style?) sign in the central reservation somewhere around here https://maps.app.goo.gl/juZFTftT4qTwwtTW9 ? I think it was a 'three lanes reduce to two' or similar, but it always looked incorrect in blue and it was certainly old and manky. I also think that there was another of the same sign - but looking correct in green - a bit further ahead.

I used to go to Runcorn reasonably often and always noticed it until the roadworks started and all the traffic was diverted to Picton Farm Road so the blue sign was there until the last year or two.

The blue signs would have been 1981 specification, but this blue sign looks like a modern replacement for the old one. They were changed to be the colour of the road class they were on in 1994, before changing to the sloped arrow in 2002.

Has a sign changed more throughout its existence? Triangle to blue rectangle to varied colour rectangle, then changed the pictogram... every TSRGD has had a change.

That's it, Bryn, thanks. They do look modern, I'm sure the one that I remember looked older and was set further from the edge of the carriageway - and it wasn't that long ago I saw it. Is your pic from the latest Google SV? If so, mine may be out of date as it still has the roadworks and no signs.

It does look odd, though, having the same signs but one in blue and the other in green. Surely someone would have noticed when these were being replaced?

Thanks again for the reply and info. I've seen a few more manky signs today so will try and post them later, keep the thread moving.

I hadn't noticed those before Kevin. I would assume that these should now be white on a non primary route and green along a primary route. On a similar theme i have noticed loads of lane signs that are the wrong colour depending on the road. Even though the colour may not be of much importance to the average road user, it appears the sign designers aren't too bothered about this. It is very inconsistent but probably seen an non important unlike getting a ADS or flag sign right.
A prime example near me is this correct on one side of the road https://www.google.com/maps/@53.3884862 ... 312!8i6656
and this (incorrect) on the other side https://www.google.com/maps/@53.3883003 ... 384!8i8192

The latest haul:

Old, battered NTR sign in a very quiet side street in Bangor https://maps.app.goo.gl/pBBEy5TR3hQVJAm8A I'd guess it's been there forever and won't be replaced for a long time, either.

This https://maps.app.goo.gl/Cnd5jWs4qxc4n4jF9 looks more weatherbeaten than it does in the photo...

...as does this https://maps.app.goo.gl/5Sy1iKNFvJhWvbrv6

In Llanfairfechan, I think this car park arrow https://maps.app.goo.gl/tYRdp4xGgQ3Qxhv39 and its associated car park sign https://maps.app.goo.gl/qepUyvV4uVKGU8zq6 have some age.
