A630

Post by roadphotos » Thu Sep 12, 2019 15:40

I thought it was worth asking a question about the A630 to see if anyone has the answer. Most maps show the part of the A630 west of the A1(M) junction 36 as being a Primary Route (coloured green) and the section of the A630 east of the A1(M) towards Doncaster as a Non Primary Route (coloured red) but all of the signs at the A1(M) junction 36 seem to suggest the opposite. The A630 from the A1(M) towards Conisbrough and Rotherham has Non Primary Route signage (white signs) and the A630 east from the A1(M) towards Doncaster has green Primary Route signs. All of the signs seem to say the opposite of how the A630 is shown on most maps. All of the A630 from Rotherham to the A1(M) at junction 36 has white Non Primary Route signs. Does anyone have any more information on this.

Given that both Rotherham and Doncaster are primary destinations I would have expected the A630 to be a primary road but perhaps the assumption is that since using the M18/M1 is usually faster that is considered primary.

Checks extremely old (17/12/1999) Y+H primary route map PDF

The A630 is primary from Sheffield to the M1 at J33, then non-primary to the A1(M) at Warmsworth, then primary through Doncaster to M18 J4.

Whether that remains the case is another matter of course...

The current AA road atlases show the A630 between Sheffield and Doncaster as described above. Although Rotherham is a primary destination, no primary routes pass through the town itself.

The latest OS maps now show the A630 between Rotherham and the A1(M) as a Non Primary Route (coloured red), they had previously shown this section of the A630 as a Primary Route (coloured green). This makes more sense as all of the signs on this part of the road are white (Non Primary).

Streetmap is feeling very conflicted about it!

If I use ViewRanger, which doesn't always have the latest version of OS maps, at 1:50,000 it shows the A630 as primary between Doncaster and the A1(M) and non-primary between the A1(M) and Rotherham ... but zoom out and they swap round, with the Doncaster side turning non-primary and the Rotherham side turning primary!

It also shows a bridge over the A1(M) that doesn't exist. At the end of the southbound slip road at junction 36 a dismantled railway is shown going over the A1(M) on a bridge but there is no bridge at this location. All of the A630 between Rotherham and the A1(M) is now shown as a Non Primary Route (coloured red) on the OS maps, I'm guessing that the Streetmap only updates gradually so it should eventually show the same. I'm not sure it it's still the case but it used to show the A418 between Oxford and Aylesbury parts Primary Route and other parts Non Primary so it's not uncommon.

Fortunately, it's correct on SABRE Maps.

Thumbs Up from another ViewRanger user. At last, *PROPER* maps on the move, not Google's crayon scribbles.
