It's soon going to be short sliproads to a roundabout!

Despite a long publicised closure this last weekend (which I assume did happen), I drove through this morning and nothing much has changed. No diversion onto the new roundabout, the road just continues through the works as it did last week.

Not sure if the weather killed it, or whether the plan was never to move traffic onto the roundabout on this weekend closure.

So here we are. Just after the third full weekend closure. No more discernable progress made when I drove through this morning. Looks like they did a bit of planing but nothing of any consequence.

As part of my Waze map editing, another local editor has confirmed the southbound carriageway is now using the east side of the roundabout after the closures this weekend.

Does the M181 have special circumstances that allow a rbt to be built or has this set a precedent for the future? Can any motorway now become developer fodder, with rbts or signalled at grade junctions? We know from Delta at the M49 that they get what they want but, won't do what they should.

There are other roundabouts on motorways elsewhere. There's nothing wrong with flat roundabouts in the middle of a motorway, apart from them being terminally rubbish.

The big headache with flat roundabouts is if an all-purpose road plugs in, as the M58/M6 is about to discover when J26 hosts a rubbish development corridor.

I offer the M271... designed and built with a roundabout in the middle (M27/J3 and presumably M271/J2?)

I believe the only numbered junction is that with Brownhill Way!

Certainly it is not signposted as J2 - maybe the powers that be have overlooked its existence?

New motorway!

Post by delinquentwoody »

Ladies and gents we have a new motorway.. I give you.. the A1077(M)!

Driving past the former M181 terminus roundabout earlier, all signs have been changed today with large new permanent signs erected indicating the motorway at the north end is now the A1077(M). Having not yet had chance to drive on this new motorway (!) I can only assume this motorway covers the half a mile or so to the first newly constructed roundabout before becoming the soon to be declassified, M181. So it would appear this very short stretch between the two roundabouts is to remain a motorway on a permanent basis, making one of the shortest motorways significantly shorter still when the remainder of the M181 is declassified. I wonder where the A1077(M) will rank in the shortest motorway league.. definitely a new contender for the pathetic motorways..

Perhaps, when the works are complete the M181 will cease to exist, with the length of the former M181 in its entirety from the M180 junction, will become a southern extension of the A1077 with the short half mile stretch described above now being the A1077(M).

I will try and get a photo of the new motorway sign next time I drive past on Friday.

The only reason I can think that they would do that is maybe to save on the cost of replacing some road signs, because generally that stretch of road, like the A601(M), doesn't need motorway restrictions.

I thought that.. but we are talking all new very large signs here on all approaches to the roundabout to sign the A1077(M).. new concrete bases for the signs and new style posts etc.

All the old signs on there were getting exceptionally long in the tooth, it's good they've gone IMHO.

Indeed, good to see investment in the road system around here, I believe once finished the new roads should work well to alleviate the congestion around Berkeley Circle caused by the present layout.

Hi!

It could be that it's been decided to retain the motorway regulations as far as the original end of them as Frodingham Grange Roundabout and reclassify the M181 as A1077(M) – I certainly got the impression the M180 J3 was going to be signed "Scunthorpe (Central & West) A1077" with the motorway regulations terminating on the new B1450 access roundabout!

Has a brand new blue "flag" sign with chopsticks and "A1077(M)" replaced the original M181 sign that led of Frodingham Grange?

Incidentally, is the number of Industrial HGV destinations on that new black Lorry Route sign pointing along the A1077 a UK record? I thought that sign–designers aren't supposed to list that many on a single sign?!
