M90 J12 Broxden

Post by Erath »

Passed a new sign on the M90 spur exit of Broxden Roundabout last night that proudly proclaims:

Edinburgh
Aberdeen
Dundee
Braemar
Blairgowrie
Coupar Angus
[12] M90

So the northernmost motorway junction is now numbered. I'd always assumed if it had even a secret number, it would be 10A. Any precedent for spur junction numbering like so?

So we have J11 on one of the arms at the end of the M90 and J12 on the other?

The same also appears to happen here on the A601(M). For such a small motorway, it has a lot of junctions.

There seems no doubt that Broxden was J11 in the days when the NE arm was M85. I have two Landrangers showing it as 11, and it may be on other maps too.

I'll check into how new it is - I'm fairly certain it was replaced recently after being accident damaged.

So an east-west journey bypassing Perth from the A90 (Dundee) to A9 (Stirling) will see traffic on the M90 going through jncs 11, 10 then 12. A bit like the numbering on the M876, jnc 1, 2, 8, 7, 3.

Of course, the other possibility is that Broxden is jnc 12 to follow on from jnc 11 of the M9 at Dunblane! This would follow on from the precedent set when the M80 ended at jnc 3 and continued, several miles later, at jnc 4.

I seem to recall seeing maps from the 1970s, when the motorways round Perth first opened, that showed the junction at the end of then then M85 at jnc 12 with Broxden then, of course, jnc 11. It might have been a mapping error, of course, as I'm fairly show that the M85 had a jnc 1 until the M90 took it over.

The one relevant Landranger I have (dating from shortly before the renumbering of the M85/A85 as M90/A90) shows the end of the M85 as 1. The 1982 and 1984 Routeplanners show the same.

However I also have a 1977 Routeplanner which shows the motorways around Perth as under construction. The only junction with a number shown is the one at the end of what became the M85 - and that is shown as 11!

Further south the M90 is shown as reaching as far north as J8, with a short section north of J8 under construction, then a gap as far as what eventually became J9.

This was the hardest part of the M90 to plan and build I'd imagine. The railway line that used to run through the area passed through Glenfarg via two long tunnels and the M90 between 8 and 9 has the super bend to get it round Balmanno Hill.

I think that the junction at the north end of the M85 was indeed junction 1. I've got an OS atlas dating to the 1990s which shows this - and the M85 wiki agrees with me!

Interestingly the strip maps in the 1974 New Book Of The Road shows the M90 as complete except for the section between junctions 8 and 9. This uses the current numbering (J11 is Barnhill, J12 is Broxton)! This may just have been wishful thinking as the actual atlas part shows the J10/11/12 section as being under construction (and doesn't mark J9-J10 at all).

From the SABRE Wiki: M85 :

The M85 was the original number for the motorway linking the M90 to the A90 (previously A85) east of Perth via the Friarton Bridge. It was renumbered as part of the M90 in 1994.
