The great clearway hunt
I'm currently trying to compose a list of clearways in Great Britain, and need some help from you to give me the clearways you can think of. So far my list is as follows:
A419 / A417 - Swindon - Gloucester
Some of the A40 (Around Witney)
A350 M4 J17 - Chippenham
A55 Chester - Holyhead
A75 around Woodside
Winnats Pass
Piece of minor road up near Glencoe (http://goo.gl/maps/q8PNj)
Some of the A27
Most of the A1 in England
A4 Batheaston bypass
So, where are the rest?

All of the A42.
Various parts of the A30, A31, A33, A34, A35, A36 and A38.
Slightly more interesting (IMO) is single carriageway clearways. Here's one, although irritatingly neither end is single carriageway.

Re: The great clearway hunt
I think you could be underestimating how long a list that could be. Are you including urban examples?
A few others are the A9 between Broxden Roundabout and Struie Junction.
A82 approx 1 mile past Urquhart Castle.
B862 between Holm Roundabout and Dores.

Also the road from the A6187 towards Mam Farm.RJDG14 wrote:Winnats Pass

Re: The great clearway hunt
They're pretty commonplace, as Glen said, so this could be a very long list...
Here are three single-carriageway ones:
A5117 (which I think is clearway for its entire length, and mostly S2)
B5160, where the proximity of the National Trust's Dunham Massey estate is presumably the reason for the clearway
A626 Tiviot Way, Stockport

The A92 between Preston roundabout and the Bankhead roundabout in Glenrothes is signed as a 1 mile clearway.

Re: The great clearway hunt
Frequently used by me in NI:
A8 Corrs Corner-Larne (first 1.5 miles dual, last mile dual, rest single)
A26 Dunsilly-Ballymena (dual)
A6 at Maghera park and ride (entirely single carriageway)
There are others, mainly in Co Antrim. I think A6 Sandyknowes-Templepatrick is one.

Re: The great clearway hunt
As Glen has said, there are a huge number. Are you looking at general clearways, or the more specific urban clearway? A good discussion would be which are the longest or shortest we know of? (The longest probably being on something like the A1)
Just a couple locally to me, there's virtually all of the A580, the A579 Atherleigh Way and the (approx) 500 yards long A572 Spinning Jenny Way

Re: The great clearway hunt
And to add to that, why are a higher proportion of roads under clearway status in Co Antrim than any other Northern Irish county? Is it to do with a different authority being responsible for the upkeeping of the roads?AndyB wrote:Frequently used by me in NI:

Re: The great clearway hunt
I'm not looking for "urban clearways" as the general term goes, and are not looking for the red routes within London and Birmingham, as a map already exists for them. I'm looking for general clearways in both urban and rural areas (indicated by two red lines in a circle).Nicholas wrote:As Peter has said, there are a huge number. Well, let's throw 63 miles down and look for a signed figure that's higher.Nicholas wrote:A good discussion would be which are the longest or shortest we know of? (The longest probably being on something like the A1)

Re: The great clearway hunt
Different divisions of Roads Service. Northern appears to be the only one to bother with them except for Urban Clearways and special cases like the Maghera Park and Ride (short version: the car park is free and popular)RJDG14 wrote:And to add to that, why are a higher proportion of roads under clearway status in Co Antrim than any other Northern Irish county?
