Complete list of single-carriageway motorways
I see various comments about single-carriageway motorways on roads enthusiast sites. CBRD's FAQ implies that the A6144(M) was the only single-carriageway motorway before it was downgraded, but I'm pretty sure that's not actually the case.
Searching Pathetic Motorways, I got the following list of motorways whose mainline contains single carriageway sections: M58, A38(M), A601(M), M12(NI, only for a few metres)
If we count bidirectional sliproads, we also have: M53 (J6 spur), M876 (J1 sliproad)
I'm not so sure about the A38(M), because it's got major roadworks at the moment and it tends to be given a small plastic central barrier during times of roadworks so that there's somewhere to put the yellow signs. I need to get up there at some point to see how many carriageways it has at the moment. (It is usually single-carriageway, though.)
Anyway, I have a feeling that there are some single-carriageway motorways that I missed above, and it seems quite likely that SABRE will know. So, which motorways are missing from the list? Are any of the listed ones incorrect?

There's also the Walton Summit Motorway, of course
M40 Junction 12 at Gaydon has bi-directional slip roads under motorway regulations - I'm sure there must be more.

M50 J1 is another with bidirectional sliproads.

As were the slips on Lancaster's infamous M6 J34, although that's all being changed now, of course.PeterA5145 wrote:There's also the Walton Summit Motorway, of course

And the equally infamous M50 J3, which doesn't even have traffic islands where it meets the main line of the motorway.crb11 wrote:M50 J1 is another with bidirectional sliproads.
Re: Complete list of single-carriageway motorways
The M876 has a single carriageway slip road near Falkirk, as does the M80 at Old Inns.

There are also single carriageway slips on the M25 J18 and the A404(M) at J9A.

Re: Complete list of single-carriageway motorways
The other sliproad at M1 J6 also counts, and is even worse (given that the motorway regulations have to start late to fit a priority junction onto it).

It was the only entirely single-carriageway motorway.ais523 wrote:CBRD's FAQ implies that the A6144(M) was the only single-carriageway motorway before it was downgraded, but I'm pretty sure that's not actually the case.

I think motorway regulations apply (just!) where pedestrians are allowed to cross this slip road.WHBM wrote:On a related theme here's a well-used footpath crossing a Motorway

If you're on about footpaths across motorways, there's a famous on across the M876 at J2.

M8 J5 also has a bi-directional sliproad, and a strange set of at-grade junctions on both sides to allow access to the guest house.

It is weird that one is tacitly encouraged by barrier placement when there is a ped bridge just 100 metres further down. Shows how pedestrian unfriendly ped bridges can be!WHBM wrote:On a related theme here's a well-used footpath crossing a Motorway

I didn't want to believe my Dad was stealing from his job as a road worker. But when I got home, all the signs were there.
Re: Complete list of single-carriageway motorways
I would change "single carriageway" to "two-way" where it relates to slip roads, as a normal slip road is a one-way single carriageway.

Re: Complete list of single-carriageway motorways
Would you count M5 J5?
There's a single-carriageway two-way section but does it count as part of a slip road?
Also (unrelated to the thread) what's the disturbed ground in the satellite view inside the western loop?
M74 J11 is similar (and also has a dual carriageway giving way to the slip road).
M8 J5 already mentioned is similar except that it's a private access rather than a public road. The slip roads on the motorway side of the junction with the private access are one-way.

Re: Complete list of single-carriageway motorways
No, motorway restrictions (and therefore the slip road) end where the side road joins and the road becomes two-way.wrinkly wrote:Would you count M5 J5?

Re: Complete list of single-carriageway motorways
I think it's widely accepted in highway design that if you try to block desire lines for any mode of transport too much they will just find a way through on a less suitable route. It's not lazy unless "rat running" drivers are lazy too.M5Lenzar wrote:Or how laziness friendly our culture has become...
Speaking as someone who walks with a pushchair a lot pedestrian bridges are quite crazily unfriendly for those with pushchairs, wheelchairs or with limited mobility. One of my often-used routes has a bridge over the raiways with five sets of stairs which is a nightmare. (Of course with railways you can't safely wiggle a way around!)
